Australia could turn more of its aluminium and copper resources into higher-value battery components, with a new report from national science agency CSIRO identifying opportunities to strengthen the country's domestic battery manufacturing capabilities. The report, The Future of Australian Battery Manufacturing: Cell Cans and Current Collector Foils, examines how Australia could use its existing industrial expertise, materials and manufacturing capabilities to produce key components for lithium-ion and emerging sodium-ion batteries. Rather than focusing solely on the country's critical mineral resources, the analysis explores practical ways to move further downstream and capture more value through local manufacturing. The opportunity comes as global demand for batteries continues to grow,...
Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

Giant aluminum producer Alcoa recently announced it has developed a new all-aluminum space frame and bus design for China-based electric vehicle manufacturer BYD. The first two BYD Electric Bus prototypes using the new Alcoa design were recently launched in Changsha City, Hunan Province, China. Alcoa says that by using the aluminum frame the weight of the new BYD Electric Bus body has been reduced by 40 percent, or nearly one ton, versus steel options. Alcoa also designed new forged wheels and fasteners for the bus that reduced the overall bus weight by 1.2 tons in total. The combined weight savings are expected to help improve the overall range of the electric bus by at least 10 percent. The new bus has a range of approximately 300 kilometers (186 miles) on a full charge. BYD plans to...

Jindal Aluminium plans to set up plant to produce powder coated and anodised materials. It is setting up two plants in Karnataka.Work on the first plant, near Bangalore, a 50kt/y site for sheet and foil has already started. The second plant would also be built near Bangalore for production of powder coated and anodised materials. However, ground work on the plant would start only after the first plant starts operation in April next year. Powder coating is a durable method of providing a decorative finish to metals. Anodising is an electrolytic passivation process used to increase the thickness of the natural oxide layer on the surface of metal parts. Jindal Aluminium claims to be the largest manufacturer of aluminium extrusion profiles in India commanding around 25% market share. It has...

Liton Technology, a Taiwan-based maker of formed aluminum foil used to make aluminum electrolytic capacitors, will expand the production capacity at its factory in Sichuan Province, western China, according to industry sources in Taiwan. The factory has an existing monthly production capacity of 450,000 square meters of low-voltage formed aluminum foil, the sources indicated. Liton will gradually set up 36-54 production lines mainly for medium- to high-voltage formed aluminum foil, with related monthly capacity to reach up to 310,000 square meters, the sources pointed out. Medium- to high-voltage formed aluminum foil takes more time in production and is more profitable than low-voltage foil. Liton has been developing medium- to high-voltage formed aluminum foil with higher capacitance and...

VAG’s punchy little 1.4 Twincharged engine has found its way into many fine hot hatches over the last few years, and the latest incarnation of this platform is bound to be ripe for a bit of fettling. Gloucestershire based Forge Motorsport has created a beautifully engineered uprated wastegate actuator to be able to cope with higher boost levels on tuned and hard-driven examples. Each unit is entirely hand-fabricated by Forge’s time-served craftsmen here in the UK, and uses motorsport-quality materials and fabrication methods to create a unit which is both hugely effective and aesthetically pleasing at the same time. Usually, with this engine configuration, if the factory actuator fails, you need to purchase the entire combined turbo and actuator assembly. So, not only does the Forge part...

Many real estate enterprises tend to choose color aluminum as the main material for doors and windows, while the old-fashioned aluminum alloy doors and windows market may gradually become a smaller market. During last century, many enterprises chose aluminum alloy profiles since consumers paid less attention on products quality while agencies were just caring about sales. Since aluminum alloy enables stable property and is difficult to be corroded,if treated with special finishing it can ensure at least 30 years fastness.Owing to low density, hardness and light weight, they were widely used in doors and windows, sunlight room and balcony encapsulation.Color aluminum doors and windows are also popular in international and domestic construction market with more than 86% market share.

From January to October, the non-ferrous metals industry production of Jiangxi province achieved sustainable growth. Jiangxi produced 302,000 tons aluminium products during the last ten months, which increased by 3.4% compared with last year.

Construction of the Nanshan America Advanced Aluminum Technologies plant in Lafayette is expected to be competed by May, with production to start in July. The $100 million aluminum extrusion plant eventually will employ between 150 and 200 people, with 60 employees starting during the first year. The Nanshan Group, a global company based in China, held a meeting recently at Purdue University, in part to explain the project and discuss employment opportunities. "The plant will initially run with two state-of-the-art extrusion presses and has the capacity to incorporate another two presses after startup," project manager Jamie Beardsley said. "A state-of-the-art casting facility is also planned to start in early 2013. The revolutionary extrusion and casting process will give them an edge on...

Brazil is emerging as one of the fastest growing aluminium markets in the world due to its rapidly developing economy and strong raw material base. The country has witnessed a continuous rise in the demand and import of aluminium. Consequently, the country's aluminium consumption has gone up by 8% between 2005 and 2010. Owing among the consumers, the production of aluminium in the country has increased and reached approximately 1.54 million tonnes in 2010. Factors such as low aluminium consumption level per capita and rapid development of automotive industry are expected to drive the future growth of the industry. Due to increasing penetration of cars in the country, the transportation sector is expected to boost consumption levels in the coming years. Currently, it accounts for...

Much anticipation is being generated by the upcoming SL’s extensive use of aluminum in its structure and sheetmetal. Significantly lighter than its predecessor, it’s 89% aluminum, which makes it much more interesting to tuners, who don’t have to overcome a whole lot of mass to produce a high performance vehicle. For Mercedes, it’s an excellent way to offer the same performance expected of the SL with smaller engines, thus satisfying customers and CAFE and emissions standards at the same time. Mercedes uses a combination of cast aluminum and hydroformed aluminum for the structure to meet the exacting crash and NVH standards that the company is known for. And since aluminum is a material that has been extensively recycled in various products, Mercedes has also introduced a few recycled...

Siemens VAI Metals Technologies has received an order from Novelis Korea to extend its aluminium rolling mill in Ulsan. A three-stand finishing line will be added to the plant and the first strip will be rolled in July 2013. The project is aimed at boosting capacity and enabling future production of high-grade aluminum strip. The hot rolling mill had previously consisted of a single reversing stand with two coilers and secondary systems. Siemens is supplying the mechanical and electrical equipment for the three-stand tandem rolling mill including a coiler and a coil handling system. In future, the existing reversing stand will function as a roughing mill. Lightweight cropping shears will also be installed in the entry to the finishing line.
