Australia could turn more of its aluminium and copper resources into higher-value battery components, with a new report from national science agency CSIRO identifying opportunities to strengthen the country's domestic battery manufacturing capabilities. The report, The Future of Australian Battery Manufacturing: Cell Cans and Current Collector Foils, examines how Australia could use its existing industrial expertise, materials and manufacturing capabilities to produce key components for lithium-ion and emerging sodium-ion batteries. Rather than focusing solely on the country's critical mineral resources, the analysis explores practical ways to move further downstream and capture more value through local manufacturing. The opportunity comes as global demand for batteries continues to grow,...
Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

Targray Technology International announces that it has been appointed as the global distributor of Giga Solar Materials Corp.’s new Back Surface Aluminum Paste. With the signing of this long-term agreement—which spans across Europe, North America and India—Targray now offers a back side aluminum paste that provides a uniform, high quality back surface field (BSF) for mono and multi-crystalline silicon solar cells. “New low bowing aluminum pastes are necessary to enable cell manufacturers to save costs and move to thinner silicon wafers while maintaining low cell breakage rates,” said Patrick Boutard, Product Manager at Targray. “Cell manufacturers are under constant pressure for efficiency gains to drive down their cost per watt. We have seen repeatedly that Giga Solar’s new aluminum...

The Aluminum Association’s Nick Adams said that the US is now “essentially” a net exporter, which hasn’t happened in a long time. He makes his case citing the uptick in exports within the sheet and plate markets — up 36 percent in 2011 to date, compared with the same period in 2010. Also, Adams said the “huge growth in export numbers for extrusion markets” is notable, up nearly 38 percent in 2011 to date. For the same period, US and Canada aluminum exports overall, less cross-border trade, is up 22.5 percent, whereas imports are up by only 4.8 percent. Ultimately however, according to one slide — unless I’ve missed something — the numbers don’t really add up in terms of the US being a net aluminum exporter: Seems as though Adams was speaking more to the fact that net imports have fallen...

Recently, the extra large arc-shaped die forgings which were used in large aircraft project has been developed successfully and delivered on schedule. This kind of product is the longest , heaviest and biggest project area for SWA,which also covered the die forgings subsection and shaping. It is learned that there were 3 technical issues in the production of the extra large arc-shaped die forgings. The first one was the huge capacity of equipment of die forging shaping technology. The second one was size control technology. The third one was destressing technology. With the rich technical reserve and talent, SWA tackled these problems smoothly. SWA has made great and positive contributions to China’s large aircraft project.

A group of final year mechanical engineering students of PRIST University in Thanjavur have designed low-cost 'nano' motorcycles, which could give a mileage of 97 kilometres per litre of petrol. The 'nano' motorcycles expected to hit the roads in India, will be sold at about Rs 8,000 (RM490) per unit, Press Trust of India (PTI) reported, citing the students. In 2008, Indian automaker Tata Motors had unveiled the Tata Nano - its already legendary US$2,500 car, a four door, five seat hatch, powered by a 30 HP Bosch 624 cc four stroke engine mounted out back and mated to a CVT. The students of a private university, with the technical support of Hi-Tech Project Industries, a private engineering services company at Porayar, designed this 25 kilogramme, single-seater nano motorcycle....

Rolling aluminium billets produced at Russian aluminium producer Rusal's smelters have been successfully qualified by Novelis, the world's largest producer of aluminium rolled products, Rusal said Wednesday. Rusal is also working on qualification of its products by auto manufacturers BMW and Volkswagen, the company said. The 5754 and 5182 alloys qualified by Novelis are used in car body production. The trial consignment of the billets was produced at the Rusal's Bratsk aluminium smelter. The company's Irkutsk and Sayanogorsk aluminium smelters are now having their cast wheel alloys going through the qualification process, Rusal said. "The trial consignment of AlSi7MgSr cast alloy was successfully processed at the Volkswagen plant," Rusal said in a statement. "Now the German automotive...

The World Steel Association said Nov. 30 global policymakers should take into account the release of all greenhouse gasses throughout a vehicle's lifecycle, including materials production, when drafting auto emissions standards. The association's request comes as diplomats convene in Durban, South Africa, for the 17th annual UN climate negotiations known as the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations. Focusing only on tailpipe emissions encourages the use of low-density materials, such as aluminum, that require greenhouse-gas intensive processes to produce, the association said. Alternative materials, such as aluminum, magnesium and carbon fiber, produce emissions during their manufacturing processes that are five to 20 times greater than steel, according to the World Steel...

US-based extruded aluminium can maker Exal Corporation has reached an agreement to acquire troubled Hungarian peer Szenna Pack for €14m and pay off some of its debts, consultancy KPMG Hungaria said on Tuesday. Family-owned Szenna Pack filed for bankruptcy protection in July because of a poorly-timed investment. Since then, Exal Corporation has agreed to buy Szenna Pack, take care of unpaid wages and bills, and repay 50-75% of loans backed by collateral and 10% of loans without collateral. The American company wants to continue production at Szenna Pack and keep its 120 workers. If the deal is approved by the court, Exal Corporation could move some production of its European unit Boxal to Hungary. Boxal wants to triple Szenna Pack’s output, focusing mainly on exports, and hire another 180...

Formed aluminum foil maker Jann Cherng Technological is installing new production lines for making etched aluminum foils with the additional capacity to come online in the first half of 2012, according to the company. The company said it currently imports about 80% of etched aluminum foils, the key material for the production of formed aluminum foils, from Japan and produces the remaining 20% in-house. The company said its performance has been affected by imported etched aluminum foils. As etched aluminum foils account for 70% of total production costs, the company needs to increase the internal supply of the key materials. However, with current order visibility extending to less than one month, the company said it is not positive about the outlook for the first quarter of 2012.

Mercedes' new 2012 SL will weigh a solid 140kg less than today's SL roadster - a significant saving of some 8%. This crash diet has been enabled by the adoption of aluminium for the new SL. The learnings from the SLS gullwing are now trickling down to the higher-volume SL, which will be revealed in December 2011. The lion's share of the weight saving is made in the bodyshell, which is a stout 110kg lighter than the current steel shell. That's not bad considering today's SL already has aluminium bonnets and doors. It's the first time a series production Mercedes has been made entirely out of aluminium. Some of the rear panels are crafted from magnesium, and the rollover structure in the A-pillar is steel - but 89% of the bodyshell is aluminium. The whole shell weighs 254kg. 'The effect is...
