From raw resources to battery-ready materials: Australia's downstream ambitions take shape

Australia could turn more of its aluminium and copper resources into higher-value battery components, with a new report from national science agency CSIRO identifying opportunities to strengthen the country's domestic battery manufacturing capabilities. The report, The Future of Australian Battery Manufacturing: Cell Cans and Current Collector Foils, examines how Australia could use its existing industrial expertise, materials and manufacturing capabilities to produce key components for lithium-ion and emerging sodium-ion batteries. Rather than focusing solely on the country's critical mineral resources, the analysis explores practical ways to move further downstream and capture more value through local manufacturing. The opportunity comes as global demand for batteries continues to grow,...

Germany-France aluminium FRP trade 2026 dips to $692m but specialised exchange holds strong

Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

UAE's Emal sales to U.S. to more than double in 2012

Emirates Aluminium (Emal), a joint venture between Abu Dhabi's Mubadala and Dubai Aluminium (Dubal), is looking to double its exports to the United States by the end of 2012 as demand from the automotive industry rises, it said on Wednesday. "The orders on our metals have increased because one of our prime products is for automotives," Saeed Fadhel Al Mazrooei, president and chief executive of Emal, said on the sidelines of an investment forum in Abu Dhabi. "We realized there is an increase in the orders on trucking since there is growth of around seven to eight percent, so we are focusing on that region." Emal, which sold 100,000 metric tonnes (110,231 tons) to the United States in 2011, expects its business to increase to 250,000 metric tonnes by the end of 2012. Mazrooei also said...

Hydro Aluminum Supports CPV Plant in Latin America

A precision-extruded aluminum framing system manufactured by Hydro, a global supplier of aluminum and aluminum products, has been installed at a 500-kilowatt electric generation facility in Durango, Mexico, the largest concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) solar facility in Latin America. Located about 550 miles north of Mexico City, the Durango site is already designated to expand to 10 megawatts total capacity in the near future. The solar plant comprises 184 Skyline Solar X14 arrays. It uses parabolic mirrors to concentrate sunlight onto crystalline silicon PV cells. These arrays are mounted on extruded aluminum space-frames that raise them off the ground and allow them to track the sun through its daily east-west arc. Extruded aluminum was chosen for the frame structures because it provides...

UAE, Japan trade surges 37.5% to $50.38b in 2011

The UAE and Japan bilateral trade in 2011 continued to increase and it helped the former to improve its position among the top trading partners of Japan in the world from 11 to 9, according to the Japan External Trade Organisation, or Jetro. Last year Japan’s trade with the UAE recorded a 37.58 per cent growth in the value of bilateral trade, in spite of the sluggishness in the world economy and the occurrence of earthquake, tsunami and a nuclear disaster in Japan. In 2011, value of two-way trade jumped to to $50.38 billion, compared to $36.62 billion in 2010. Exports to the UAE grew by 1.82 per cent to $7.47 billion, while imports grew by 46.53 per cent to $42.91 billion in 2011. The sizeable increase in the value of imports was mainly attributed to the surge in the price of crude oils...

Stable demand for aluminium packaging

Manufacturers of packaging made of aluminium appear to be satisfied with the financial year 2011. At 401,300 tonnes (t) of aluminium foils, tubes, and aerosol and beverage cans, aluminium packaging manufacturers were producing almost at the high level of the previous year (2010: 405,000 t). “Even though there was a 1 per cent decline in production, the reasons behind it had more to do with technical factors,” explained Christian Wellner, Managing Director of the Gesamtverband der Aluminiumindustrie e.V. (GDA), in Düsseldorf. Thinner aluminium foils and a trend towards lighter packaging led to smaller deliveries. Despite the slight decline in demand at the beginning of 2012, caused by weak economic activity in the euro zone, utilization of capacity among exporting companies remains good....

Economic downturn and Chinese exports hit Europe’s alufoil output

European aluminium foil (alufoil) output fell in 2011 as the economic downturn and a surge in imports from China combined to give the industry a tough 12 months. One industry insider told FoodProductionDaily.com that Chinese shipments into Europe had almost doubled last year and that the threat from the country’s producers was “significant”. Weaker European output Alufoil output in the region dropped year-on-year by over 5% to 801,900 tonnes in 2011 - with thin gauge material used extensively in flexible packaging declining by just under 8%, said industry group the European Aluminium Foil Association (EAFA). Continued downgauging had also been responsible for the fall in volumes, said the body. Demand for thicker gauges, utilised more in industrial application, but also in semi-rigid...

The aluminium cycle

Timing is everything. Investing a quarter too early can influence the annual return on your portfolio. Now that Hindalco is near its 12-month lows, it reminds us of the great buy opportunity of 2009 when the stock was sub-Rs 40. Before we make our case for on whether to invest now in Hindalco or later, let us tell you some basic sentiment rules. Markets don’t give positive news when the stock is at historical lows. Whether it’s slapping of fines or subdued international aluminium prices, don’t expect news and indications to be clear and confirming. As investors, you should seek insights rather than facts. It is common that if oil prices remain above $100, alternative energy should benefit. It’s like saying aluminium prices have to stay higher for smelters to remain profitable. These are...

European alufoil deliveries down in 2011 – Cautious outlook for 2012

Full year figures for European output of alufoil in 2011 showed a modest decline in overall production levels, reflecting the cautious outlook throughout the European economic markets. However exports from Europe remained steady according to figures released by the European Aluminium Foil Association (EAFA). Total production fell back by 5.2% to 801,900 tonnes (2010: 846,300 tonnes), with thinner gauges declining by 7.9%. Thicker gauges fared much better registering only a 2.4% drop from 2010 levels. Exports held up better, down by just 0.7%. EAFA’s Roller Group Chairman Manfred Mertens commented on the outlook: “The general economic uncertainty affects the whole supply chain. Most retailers and fillers are placing orders on a ‘just in time’ basis and in lower volumes. Forecasting future...

New products excite Skana executives

President Barack Obama toured Skana Aluminum Co. about one year ago. If Obama came back to the Mirro Drive manufacturing plant he would find quite a few changes — including "SPIT" and "SAP" — designed to satisfy customers for decades to come. "Compared to a year ago, the plant is running very well," Tom Testwuide Sr., Skana's chief executive officer and board chairman, said. "Now, we are looking at future efficiencies and quality improvements." The mill employs 108 individuals supplying coil metal and other products, about 56 million pounds last year, for customers nationwide. They turn the aluminum into something they sell, like the cookware emerging from Tramontina USA, Skana's next-door neighbor under the same roof at the mammoth plant built in the 1950s.
