From raw resources to battery-ready materials: Australia's downstream ambitions take shape

Australia could turn more of its aluminium and copper resources into higher-value battery components, with a new report from national science agency CSIRO identifying opportunities to strengthen the country's domestic battery manufacturing capabilities. The report, The Future of Australian Battery Manufacturing: Cell Cans and Current Collector Foils, examines how Australia could use its existing industrial expertise, materials and manufacturing capabilities to produce key components for lithium-ion and emerging sodium-ion batteries. Rather than focusing solely on the country's critical mineral resources, the analysis explores practical ways to move further downstream and capture more value through local manufacturing. The opportunity comes as global demand for batteries continues to grow,...

Germany-France aluminium FRP trade 2026 dips to $692m but specialised exchange holds strong

Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

Loften Aluminum Foil’s 2011 Net Profit Plummets 67.75%

Shandong Loften Aluminum Foil Co., Ltd. released the 2011 annual report recently, saying its operating revenues were RMB 179,356,990,000 in 2011, up 75.52% YoY; operating profits were RMB 11.10 million, down 76.66% YoY; and net profits attributable to shareholders of listed company were RMB 11.78 million, down 67.75% YoY. There are three reasons behind the plunge in Loften Aluminum Foil’s net profit in 2011. Second, Qingdao Runfeng Aluminum Foil Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Loften Aluminum Foil, put its 50,000 mt/yr aluminum foil production line into operation, with construction in progress...

$20 million Alstom investment in Hornell would give new life to old Erie shops

A 775-car job for the San Francisco Bay area commuter service would spur the deepest level of investment in Hornell yet by the French transportation giant, with a promise to establish a new aluminum car shell manufacturing facility inside the present main car shop. If built, it would be be the only aluminum car shell manufacturing plant in the United States. Alstom now is awaiting final word on the roughly $3.4 billion contract, which has been initially secured by Montreal-based competitor Bombardier. However, BART has given Bombardier 15 days to submit information necessary for a ‘Buy America’ audit, mandated for all federally-funded transit projects in order...

China to keep rebates on aluminium product exports

China is likely to keep giving tax rebates to exporters of semi-finished aluminium products this year to encourage the exports, removing an obstacle that slowed them last year, sources at producers said on Monday. Last year,Beijingwas set to cut tax rebates on some products to 9 percent from 13-15 percent but put the plan on hold after growth in the exports sank in the second half due to expectations of the cuts and lower demand from theUnited StatesandEurope.
