From raw resources to battery-ready materials: Australia's downstream ambitions take shape

Australia could turn more of its aluminium and copper resources into higher-value battery components, with a new report from national science agency CSIRO identifying opportunities to strengthen the country's domestic battery manufacturing capabilities. The report, The Future of Australian Battery Manufacturing: Cell Cans and Current Collector Foils, examines how Australia could use its existing industrial expertise, materials and manufacturing capabilities to produce key components for lithium-ion and emerging sodium-ion batteries. Rather than focusing solely on the country's critical mineral resources, the analysis explores practical ways to move further downstream and capture more value through local manufacturing. The opportunity comes as global demand for batteries continues to grow,...

Germany-France aluminium FRP trade 2026 dips to $692m but specialised exchange holds strong

Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

3M aluminium cables installed in Siberia

Already in use on four continents in a broad range of harsh climates, 3M Aluminum Conductor Composite Reinforced (ACCR) has now been installed in Siberia, serving one of the region's largest cities, Irkutsk. Irkutsk Electronetwork Co. chose the overhead conductor as a way to avoid tower construction or right-of-way expansion while nearly doubling power transmission to the city's central district, where growing demand was putting a severe strain on capacity, according to the utility. 3M ACCR is a lightweight, low-sag, high-capacity conductor that can carry twice the current or more of conventional steel-core conductors of the same diameter, on existing towers, thereby helping utilities circumvent problems in crowded urban settings and environmentally sensitive areas. Its low-sag...

Lower tax helps CSR lift profit

BUILDING products company CSR has reported a ''pleasing'' lift in annual net profit and says it is well placed to benefit from a market recovery, but has a bearish message on the housing market. For the year to March 31, net profit before significant items was $90.7 million, slightly higher than last year's $90.2 million net profit and at the upper end of guidance. Earnings before interest and tax fell 26 per cent to $156.7 million, due to a decline in its aluminium business - on lower aluminium prices and higher smelter costs - and weakness in its Viridian glass business, driven by the high dollar and a lacklustre construction industry. Advertisement: Story continues below The property business, however, lifted earnings by 67 per cent to $24.4 million and the company was buoyed by a...

The new production line installation completed in December, increased plant output capacity from 18,000,000lbs to 30,000,000lbs/y. The modernised equipment produces extruded aluminium profiles with tighter dimensional tolerances and superior surface finishes to what was previously available in the market. Also, having strategic excess capacity shifts the service paradigm from reacting to and gearing up for sudden demand spikes to one of anticipating and fulfilling sharp up-ticks without any increases in lead times. Vitex has taken a huge step in assuring its customers that their manufacturing operations keep pace easily with increased market...

Link found between aluminium foil and Alzheimer's

Scientists from the American University of Sharjah (AUS) and the Abu Dhabi Petroleum Institute warned that wrapping spicy foods in aluminium comes with its own set of health hazards. Researchers from the Chemical Engineering Department of AUS and the institute concluded that it is safe to wrap sandwiches and other cold foods in aluminium foil but said it should not be used for cooking. In the experiment, the researchers bought aluminium foil from various shops in the UAE. They cooked enough minced meat for a family of three using six different flavourings, including tomato juice, citric acid, apple vinegar, salt and spices. They found that the experiments “clearly indicate” the foil is absorbed into the food and “the amount of leaching was found to be high in acidy foods, and even higher...
