From raw resources to battery-ready materials: Australia's downstream ambitions take shape

Australia could turn more of its aluminium and copper resources into higher-value battery components, with a new report from national science agency CSIRO identifying opportunities to strengthen the country's domestic battery manufacturing capabilities. The report, The Future of Australian Battery Manufacturing: Cell Cans and Current Collector Foils, examines how Australia could use its existing industrial expertise, materials and manufacturing capabilities to produce key components for lithium-ion and emerging sodium-ion batteries. Rather than focusing solely on the country's critical mineral resources, the analysis explores practical ways to move further downstream and capture more value through local manufacturing. The opportunity comes as global demand for batteries continues to grow,...

Germany-France aluminium FRP trade 2026 dips to $692m but specialised exchange holds strong

Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

Chinese challenge aluminium dumping ruling

CHINESE manufacturers accused of dumping aluminium products on the Australian market are seeking to have the dumping notice overturned in the Federal Court. The legal action is expected to examine the close links between Chinese enterprise and government, and what constitutes a ''public body'' in China. After Australian aluminium producer Capral notified the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service four years ago of suspected dumping, customs identified more than 300 importers of Chinese aluminium products. It concluded products had been dumped with margins ranging from 2.7 to 25.7 per cent, and subsidised with margins from 3.8 to 18.4 per cent. Capral had suffered a notable fall in sales and had been forced to lower its price to try to match the Chinese prices. PanAsia Aluminium...

State urges Hindalco to promote downstream units

The Odisha government has urged A V Birla controlled Hindalco Industries to promote downstream industries in aluminium sector for employment generation in the state instead of confining itself to aluminium making. “We have asked Hindalco Industries to explore opportunities for promoting downstream industries in aluminium sector rather than focusing on expansion alone. The creation of downstream units will boost employment generation in the state,” said Chief Secretary B K Patnaik after a meeting with Hindalco Industries managing director Debu Bhattacharya. It may be noted, to promote downstream industries in aluminium sector, state owned Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Idco) had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Aluminium Company Limited (Nalco)...

Government Urges to Lift Aluminium Import Duties

NEW DELHI: Federation of Indian Micro and Small and Medium Enterprises (FISME) on Thursday called for immediate lifting of import duties on electrical-grade aluminium for speeding up power projects. "Power cuts in peak summer months are set to escalate due to an acute shortage of aluminium, inordinately delaying completion of transmission and distribution projects in the pipeline," FISME said in a statement. It said that in the past few weeks, there had been a sharp upswing in the release of orders by the Power Grid Corporation and other utilities which had pushed the demand for electrical-grade aluminium. The Indian producers of the metal were not able to meet the sudden surge in demand, the statement said. "The only way out is to encourage imports through abolition of customs duty so...

Petchem projects dominate Kingdom's industrialization drive

Saudi Arabia's project market is buoyant with a string of petrochemicals and minerals projects being rolled out. The authorities are keen to vertically integrate their petrochemicals industry with a view to producing materials for a nascent domestic automotive industry (among other sectors). Elsewhere, corporate output growth has cooled, though retail sales are growing at a record rate. Bank mortgage lending is also brisk, according to Samba Economic Monitor released yesterday. The Saudi project market continues to thrive. Latest data from Meed put the value of projects "planned or underway" at $745 billion in mid-April, around 13 percent higher than a year earlier. These figures need to be treated with some caution: The topline number is some 30 percent larger than the nominal size of...

Extruded aluminium cases provide versatile housing for pcbs

Schroff has introduced a new family of extruded aluminium cases, which it says provides a versatile and robust housing for either standardised or non standard pcbs. The minipac enclosures are available in two different versions: the trapezoidal version can accept three boards measuring 50, 60 and 65mm in width, while the rectangular style is designed to accommodate either four standard 160 x 100mm boards or eight 160 x 60mm boards. The cases are suitable for wall mounting, din rail mounting or as desktop enclosures. They are designed to accommodate single board computers or com modules, such as in test and measurement, industrial, networking or railway applications. Schroff says their large aluminium surface area ensures optimal heat dissipation and the cases provide environmental...

Designs of two new Airbus and Boeing aircraft are to boost Alcoa's stock performance

The designs of two new Airbus and Boeing (NYSE:BA) aircraft are a saving grace for Alcoa Inc. (NYSE:AA), according to the aluminum company’s chief executive Klaus Kleinfeld, who on Friday told shareholders at the company’s annual meeting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that Alcoa is putting its energy into supplying aluminum products to the promising aerospace and automobile markets. He also said the company’s poor stock performance is due to sagging aluminum prices stemming from concerns about European debt. Kleinfeld told the audience of 200 that the company had been “very worried” a few years ago when many aircraft manufacturers stopped using aluminum to build new aircraft in favor of composite materials. But the designs of the new Airbus 320neo and Boeing 737-MAX call for lots of...
