From raw resources to battery-ready materials: Australia's downstream ambitions take shape

Australia could turn more of its aluminium and copper resources into higher-value battery components, with a new report from national science agency CSIRO identifying opportunities to strengthen the country's domestic battery manufacturing capabilities. The report, The Future of Australian Battery Manufacturing: Cell Cans and Current Collector Foils, examines how Australia could use its existing industrial expertise, materials and manufacturing capabilities to produce key components for lithium-ion and emerging sodium-ion batteries. Rather than focusing solely on the country's critical mineral resources, the analysis explores practical ways to move further downstream and capture more value through local manufacturing. The opportunity comes as global demand for batteries continues to grow,...

Germany-France aluminium FRP trade 2026 dips to $692m but specialised exchange holds strong

Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

Stricter production standard hampers supply of the iPhone 5’s anodized aluminum housings

Apple Inc.’s iPhone 5 supply shortfall is being exacerbated by a quality-control crackdown at Foxconn Technology Group that’s designed to cut the number of devices shipped with nicks and scratches, according to a person familiar with the matter. The scrapes, which sparked complaints with the iPhone’s debut last month, are due to Apple’s decision to use a type of aluminum that helps make the smartphone thinner and lighter. Senior Apple managers told executives at Foxconn near the end of September to tighten production standards, said the person, who asked not to be named because the matter was private. Stricter benchmarks have hampered production of the iPhone 5’s anodized aluminum housings, forcing Foxconn’s Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. (2317) to idle factories, the person said. The...

Aleris to Discontinue Use of NASAAC Index in Aluminum Pricing

Aleris today announced it will no longer supply multi-month pricing mechanisms that utilize the North American Special Aluminum Alloy Contract (NASAAC) Index as a basis for 2013 pricing. Aleris is opting to use other indices and mechanisms that provide a better and closer correlation to the cost of aluminum scrap used in the products it offers to its specification alloy and recycling customers. A global leader in aluminum rolled and extruded products, aluminum recycling and specification alloy manufacturing, Aleris products are used by manufacturers in almost every industry. Headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, the company has approximately 7,300 employees and currently operates 41 production facilities in North America, Europe and Asia.

GPI Prototype adds aluminium option with new Direct Metal Laser Sintering machine

GPI Prototype, based in Lake Bluff, IL, USA, has announced that it has completed the installation of a third Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) machine supplied by EOS GmbH. The additional EOSINT M270 joins the EOSINT M270 & M280 machines currently being used at GPI to build metal parts. The addition of a third machine expands their DMLS material selection to include aluminium. DMLS offers many advantages over traditional tooling including the ability to manufacture complex geometries and shapes not possible with CNC machining. Conformal cooling channels can also be integrated into designs to dramatically reduce injection molding cycle/lead times and lower costs. GPI offers six material choices for DMLS including Stainless Steel (GP1 & PH1), Titanium (Ti64), Cobalt Chrome (MP1), Maraging...

Aerospace and automobile sector helped Alcoa to a quarterly profit

Stronger demand for aluminum products from airplane and automobile producers helped Alcoa Inc's third-quarter profit beat Wall Street's expectations despite weak aluminum prices and worries about China's slumping economy. But, even with its strong downstream business, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Klaus Kleinfeld said the company had noticed a "slight slowdown" in some regions and end markets. Kleinfeld, however, was bullish about Alcoa's downstream businesses, noting that the aerospace and automobile markets were coming back strongly from the recession. "Global aerospace remains solid," with a backlog of 8,500 planes, or eight years work, he said. "In autos, we are seeing an increase of 11 to 15 percent (annual) growth in North America." Airplane maker Boeing Co, truck builder...

All aluminium body Mercedes SL500 roadster sheds weight to gain more power

At least the body panels were alloy, except for the roof, which was garden-variety steel. One night I encountered Skippy. As he bounded towards me, I pulled over and stopped. Phew, missed him. So the stupid bag of fleas jumped on my roof. I leapt out seething with rage and noticed two claw marks that no-one else seemed to see but me. But at least my fragile aluminium body panels were intact. Will it be the same with Mercedes-Benz's latest engineering marvel, the all-new, nearly all-aluminium SL500 roadster? I doubt it. With the advantage of two more decades of dent-proofing metallurgy, Mercedes has built the entire body shell and floor pan - with the exception of some steel reinforcing in the A pillars - from the lighter material, saving as much weight as a Sumo wrestler. Imagine dropping...

Aluminum diecasters hit by Japanese automakers' output cuts in China

Japanese diecasters have been hit by Japanese automakers being forced to cut production in China due to slowing sales triggered by geopolitical tensions, industry sources said Tuesday. Japan's largest automaker Toyota Motor's September car sales in China fell to 44,100 vehicles, from 75,200 vehicles in August, the company said. Output at Toyota's nine assembly and engine manufacturing plants in China was expected to plunge due to slow sales. A company spokeswoman said Tuesday some Toyota plants in China had been closed since the week of September 17 but declined to elaborate. Toyota produced 67,600 vehicles in China in August, according to data from the company. Meanwhile, Nissan Motor and Honda Motor said their Chinese plants started operating Monday after being closed for the National...

Anodized aluminium Black & Slate iPad mini to be unveiled this month

Earlier this week, new reports emerged claiming that Apple will send out invitations for an iPad mini event on 10 October, with the event being held on 17 October and a 2 November on sale date. If the new photographs prove to be legitimate, Apple could offer its 7.85in tablet in an anodized aluminium Black & Slate model like the one introduced with the iPhone 5 in September. However, many iPhone 5 owners have reported that the Black & Slate model scratches easily, which could spell trouble for a Black & Slate iPad mini. Apple’s Phil Schiller says that the iPhone 5 scratches are ‘normal,’ though. According to UkrainianiPhone, the photographs were taken by a source “close to Apple production line in China.” The photographs show a Lightning dock connector at the bottom of the iPad mini, as...
