Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

For shipments in the calendar month January 2013, the conversion price (plus LME) of 1050 alloy standard sheet will be increased by €35 per metric ton, or £30 per mt, while the same price for 5754 alloy standard sheet will rise by €65 per mt. For long-term supply agreements, an alternative solution is possible, either with variable price elements or with an additional security charge to cover further cost increases. "By taking this measure, we pass on costs that we cannot influence to the market," emphasizes Wolfgang Rempe, head of the General Engineering business unit. "Also in a challenging market environment, we aim to safeguard a short notice and flexible supply of our semi-finished products to Hydro's customers, thereby helping to reduce the operating capital bound across the entire...

The tussle between the steel and aluminum industry over their respective places in supplying the automotive sector is far from over, but has only just begun. “However you want to measure it, the steel industry is roughly 9 times bigger than the aluminum industry,” said Richard Schultz, managing director of Ducker Worldwide’s automotive materials practice at Aluminum Week 2012 in Chicago. The only way Ducker’s optimistic forecast for automotive-grade aluminum gets pushed toward the downside case is if the steel industry out-innovates aluminum in the next few years, he said. Ducker is mainly pointing towards stronger alloys, both in steel and aluminum sectors, to compete on the material specs area, as well as the innovations used to weld the metal together. “The joining technology is where...

In an exclusive interview with MetalMiner at Aluminum Week in Chicago, Aluminum Association president Heidi Biggs Brock echoed the big point of the overall conference: that the automotive sector is truly driving aluminum demand: Automotive ‘Lightweighting’: Boon for Producers and Prices? From his keynote presentation last week, Kaiser Aluminum CEO Jack Hockema suggested that government regulation is a nearly single-handedly the key driver of auto-grade aluminum demand, simply because corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards continue to push automakers to “lightweight” their vehicles. But has that push reached its limit? In terms of short-to-medium-term demand, however, CAFE standards are already locked in to a certain extent. Michael Robinet, managing director of IHS Global...

Kaiser Aluminum Corp reported third-quarter net income of $29.2 million or $1.51 earnings per share compared to $4.1 million, or $0.21 per share for the third quarter 2011. Excluding the impact of non-run-rate items, adjusted net income was $20 million or $1.02 per share for the third quarter 2012, reflecting a significant improvement from adjusted net income of $12 million or $0.62 per share for the third quarter 2011. Net sales for the quarter rose to $335.5 million from $322.3 million in the prior year quarter. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected the company to report earnings of $0.82 per share on revenues of $333.61 million for the quarter. Analysts' estimates typically exclude special items.

Noranda Aluminum Holding Corp.'s earnings dropped sharply in the third quarter over the previous year, though the company beat analyst expectations. The company (NYSE: NOR) reported earnings of $3.8 million on revenue of $336 million for the quarter ended Sept. 30. Those numbers were far higher, at $30.8 million and more than $400 million, respectively, in the same time period last year. This comes on the heels of dropping profits in the second quarter as well, and management again cited dropping metal prices as a major culprit. President and CEO Kip Smith also cited production disruptions due to Hurricane Isaac, but said the company is prudently managing its costs amid low prices and knows it must be able to deal with outside events. "Our third quarter 2012 results reflect (London Metal...

Russia's AK5M2 secondary aluminum alloy exported to Japan have been hit by bleak automotive demand outlook for the first quarter of 2013, market sources said Monday. AK5M2 alloy, made by re-melting engine and other aluminum scrap, is used by Japanese secondary aluminum alloy smelters as feedstock for making ADC12. AK5M2 contains less silicon and copper compared to ADC12. Russian producers are currently offering November spot shipments, which arrive in Japan in December-January. Japanese ADC12 smelters showed little interest, as their productions started to fall this month on the back of Japanese automakers cutting output by 10% in October from July-September levels. Automaker output cuts followed the September 21 termination of the government subsidies for fuel-efficient car purchases. In...

Japanese diecasters have been hit by Japanese automakers being forced to cut production in China due to slowing sales triggered by geopolitical tensions, industry sources told Platts. Japan's largest automaker Toyota Motor's September car sales in China fell to 44,100 vehicles, from 75,200 vehicles in August, the company said. Toyota produced 67,600 vehicles in China in August, according to data from the company. The September output, which will be released at the end of this month, is likely to have fallen, as the company spokeswoman says some of its nine Chinese plants were "adjusted output " since the week of September 17. Toyota and other Japanese automakers declined to disclose October output planned in China. According to Japanese diecaster and trade sources, their...

The European Commission is investigating whether Chinese producers of aluminium foil are evading anti-dumping duties imposed by the European Union in 2009, it said on Tuesday. The EU executive said there was evidence that tariffs imposed in 2009 were being circumvented by China exporting rolls of foil to Europe that were then converted into the product affected by the duties. It said the new investigation was triggered by a complaint by four European producers, Symetal, Eurofoil Luxembourg, Alcomet, and Hydro Aluminium Rolled Products, part of Norsk Hydro. Three years ago, the bloc imposed duties on rolls of aluminium foil 0.008-0.018 mm thick, no wider than 650 mm and weighing more than 10 kg, from China, Brazil and Armenia. The EU duties ranged from 25.6 to 47.0 percent on aluminium...

Researchers have developed a new, non-toxic coating for aluminum that can replace the carcinogenic chromate coatings used for more than half a century to protect aluminum from corrosion. “There is no question that this will be able to replace the chromate-based coating,” said lead researcher Dev Chidambaram, assistant professor of materials science and engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno. “The coating has shown exceptional performance.” Attempts to replace chromate coatings with environmentally friendly coatings have been underway for decades. Awareness of the dangerous effects of chromates was brought to light in 1993 by the real-life incident involving Erin Brokovich, which was depicted in the movie of the same name, released in 2000. Although the use of chromates for consumer...
