Constellium inaugurates new ‘Airware’ aluminum casthouse

Aluminum specialist Constellium’s new foundry in Issoire, France, is up and running–a key step in a strategy aimed at regaining some of the ground lost to composite materials in aircraft construction. The casting house focuses on a new family of alloys, dubbed Airware, which are lighter than the previous generation made of aluminum-lithium. According to Constellium (Chalet B39), the Issoire foundry is the world’s first large-scale facility producing such alloys, with a planned capacity of 14,000 metric tons per year. Two furnaces have started operating and Constellium considers the facility to be fully operational and ready to follow the ramp-up phase of Airware’s first two customers: Airbus, which uses Airware alloys for its A350 XWB long-haul twinjet, and Bombardier, which has selected...

Boeing defends 777X aluminum hull as plastic A350 flies

Boeing Co. (BA) defended the use of traditional aluminum for the fuselage of its upgraded 777 twin-aisle jet as Airbus SAS (EAD)’s A350, a competing model made chiefly of composite plastic, takes the spotlight at the Paris Air Show. Improved engines and wings on the 777X will make up for a heavier metal fuselage than the largest A350, Boeing Commercial Airplanes Chief Executive Officer Ray Conner told reporters in Paris. The A350-1000 is due to enter service in 2017, while Boeing has said the 777X may debut by decade’s end. “It won’t be that bad. I think we’re going to be in decent shape,” Conner said of the planes’ weight differential. “We still believe we have operating economics that will be better.” Boeing decided against replicating the composite-plastic construction of the 787...

South Korea's largest automaker Hyundai Motor plans to boost vehicle production in the third quarter to recover production losses resulting from strike action over March-May, industry sources said Tuesday. Workers at Hyundai's Ulsan plant went on strike on weekends from March 9 in a dispute over wages. The plant had been operating on weekends in the first quarter due to strong demand, a company spokeswoman said. Normal operations resumed May 25, but a production loss of 83,000 vehicles was attributed to the strike, the spokeswoman added. The company has since boosted output to meet its goal of producing 1.4 million vehicles at the Ulsan plant in 2013, sources said. Fortunately, it was reported that the Samsung Galaxy S5 will be part of the company’s new design direction called “Design 3.0,” but what about the materials used for the next-gen flagship? As you’ve probably noticed, the other big players of the smartphone world are trying to make their terminals look as premium as possible (see HTC One and Sony Xperia Z) using...

The eight plants, of which only one was profitable last year, accounted for over 1 billion yuan of losses for Chalco in 2012, China's largest aluminium producer said in an exchange filing. In all, Chalco suffered a loss of 8.3 billion yuan last year. Chalco says it is exiting the fabrication side of the business as it lacks competitive advantages, and it is expected to book a gain of 1 billion yuan from the sale of the eight plants. Yesterday's announcement of the sale came three days after it said it was disposing of a processing plant in the country's northwest for 1.66...
