The nine violations involve inadequate machine guarding, lack of guard railing around a fall hazard and failing to evaluate spaces to determine if they required confined space entry permits. Additional violations include modifying powered industrial trucks without manufacturer’s approval, failing to maintain floors in a dry condition and failing to inspect slings and fastenings prior to use and remove damaged slings from service.

A trade group representing brewers is urging the London Metal Exchange to take steps to reduce warehouse backlogs that beermakers say boost the cost of aluminum used to make drinks cans. The Beer Institute in Washington pressed the exchange to “end restrictive and outdated warehousing rules and practices that are interfering with normal supply and demand dynamics,” according to a statement provided yesterday by Christopher Thorne, a spokesman for the group. Members include MillerCoors LLC and Anheuser-Busch InBev NV (ABI)’s Anheuser-Busch unit, according to the organization’s website. The beer-makers join LME users including industrial copper companies in complaining about long waits for metal in warehouses monitored by the exchange. While the LME tried to quell those concerns by raising...

Sri Lanka based Piramal Glass Ceylon PLC says, it has seen a shift in the consumption pattern of Sri Lankans towards strong beers packed in aluminum cans. Chairman of the company, Vijay Shah in his review made to the firm’s latest annual report says, this factor along with several others impacted its domestic sales volumes. According to him, the major decline has been in the Liquor segment which plays a vital part in the Piramal’s local sales. “Part of our low end liquor market was lost to the cheap second-hand low quality liquor bottles which were imported into the Country”, Vijay revealed. However, despite the drop experienced in the domestic market, the firm’s profit after tax during the financial year 2012 /13 has seen a year-on-year growth of 6-pct to stand at INR 725 million. Metal is staging a comeback, at least in the aerospace world, where aluminium has been challenged by newfangled carbon-composites in the industry's perpetual war on weight. As plane makers showed off their latest carbon-plastic jetliners at the Paris Airshow this week, metal firms lobbied hard for new, lighter aluminium alloys. Aleris International, for example, is developing an aluminium-magnesium-scandium alloy that it says is 5 percent lighter than conventional aircraft aluminium and could be ready for later production of next-generation Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737MAX jets. Nearly 90 percent of the 9,600 aircraft on order with Boeing and Airbus are metallic, said Ingrid Jorg, senior vice president of Aleris, mainly because smaller jets won't use composite fuselages for decades, if...

With Boeing and Airbus fighting in the background, Embraer S.A. announced a new generation of E-Jets as the aircraft company “foresees a demand for 6,400 commercial jets with capacity of up to 130 seats, over the next 20 years,” according to a recent release. As for the design and execution of these aircraft, “the E-Jets E2 will be capable of achieving similar costs per seat of larger re-engined narrow body aircraft, with significantly lower costs per trip, thus creating new opportunities for lower risk development of new markets and fleet right-sizing by airlines.” One of the main raw material elements of airplane construction, aluminum, saw price drops on the day. The cash price of primary aluminum saw the biggest decline of the day, dropping 1.6 percent on the LME to close at $1,813...

SMM survey found that the operating rate at surveyed aluminum wire & cable producers averaged 69.36% in May, up from April’s 64.5%. This marks the third month in a row that the operating rate grew. Operating rates at domestic aluminum wire & cable producers rose significantly in May, driven largely by increased power grid projects. Medium and large producers secured more orders than smaller ones as the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) demands higher production capacity and product quality. Small producers are only able to gain orders from municipal engineering and real estate sectors. This is why operating rates at small producers were lower than those at medium and large producers. Medium and large producers say their current orders are sufficient for them for produce through the...
