Aluminium requirements for MeerKAT to benefit Hulamin

A little while back, MeerKAT radio telescope project manager Willem Esterhuyse gave a presentation on the estimated aluminium and steel requirements for MeerKAT and the bigger Square Kilometre Array (SKA). These radio telescope projects will delve into the evolution of the galaxy, the universe and dark energy, among other scientific endeavours. SKA will take until 2024 to build, and will ultimately involve 2,500 radio antennas spread over a square kilometre of the Karoo. This leaves JSE-listed companies such as South Africa’s primary steel maker ArcelorMittal SA and semi-fabricated aluminium producer Hulamin well positioned to benefit. Hulamin already has an idea of what the construction process will look like. The group says for MeerKAT — comprising the first 64-dish array, scheduled to...

Electrolytic aluminum industry in China affected by aluminium overcapacity

China has reported that the electrolytic aluminum industry was burdened by excessive overcapacity. The total losses were 670 million yuan ($109 million) in the first half of this year. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said that it will introduce specific measures to deal with the surplus capacity in the industry in the latter half of 2013. MIIT has mentioned three challenges for the industry in its report. Firstly there is overcapacity, Secondly the production costs are higher and thirdly exports are still not tailored for sluggish global demand. The ministry predicts that nonferrous materials' prices will fluctuate at low levels with minimal profits for the next half year.

JLR Focuses on Lightweighting to to meet fuel-economy goals

The only way for Jaguar Land Rover to meet fuel-economy goals with its big cars and SUVs is to make them as light as small cars, says Mark White, the man in charge of JLR’s vehicle bodies. For the U.K.-based auto maker, that means switching materials from steel to aluminum, and the new Range Rover Sport is the sixth all-aluminum model from the company since the ’02 Jaguar XJ. JLR wanted to use its existing facilities – press, paint and body shops – and switching materials from steel to aluminum fit the bill. For the current Range Rover model, the change is easily measured. The old one in steel weighed 5,688 lbs. (2,580 kg), while the aluminum vehicle tips the scales at 4,762 lbs. (2,160 kg). The body is more than half the weight of the vehicle, when trim, mechanical parts and closures are...

The Consumers' Foundation in china calls for regulations on aluminum levels in food

The Consumers' Foundation (CF) has urged health authorities to regulate the levels of aluminum in food after finding the metal in almost half of the food samples it tested recently Currently there are no regulations governing the levels of aluminum allowed in food, despite the belief that long-term consumption of the metal may damage one's brain, the foundation said, as it released the results of its tests. Health authorities responded to the CF's call by saying that regulations may be introduced later this year. Of the 32 items — including pastries, potato chips and baking powders — that the CF tested, 14 were found to contain aluminum, with amounts ranging from 50 parts per million to 5,000 ppm. The item that contained 5,000 ppm of aluminum was a baking powder collected from a store in...

Omni Circuit Boards produces working aluminum trace circuit board for quantum supercomputer

Omni Circuit Boards, a British Columbia-based circuit board manufacturer, has announced the successful development of an aluminum monometal wire-bonded circuit board. The prototype, designed and manufactured for use in a D-Wave Systems quantum supercomputer, allows for superconductivity and operation in low temperatures just above absolute zero. This development - often considered to be technically impossible because of challenges involved in the manufacturing process - is the result of years of study and collaborative effort. Omni President Paul Jackson notes the breakthrough could allow for new possibilities in advanced wire-bonding and cryogenics. He also points out the board is the first of its kind and could mark the beginning of new ideas in superconductivity. "Because aluminum...
