Recently, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced the list of eliminated laggard capacity enterprises in 19 industry sectors, involving alumina, electrolytic aluminum and other industries. According to the list, the eliminated electrolytic aluminum totaled 260,000 tons. Meanwhile, the Ministry strives for shutting down the laggard capacity on the list before the end of September, and makes sure to completely eliminate before the end of this year. The measure may accelerate the speed of the elimination of laggard capacity in the aluminum industry. Compared with the current capacity up to 24 million tons, the 260,000 tons laggard capacity amounts to little, but at least, it works in the market.

The underlying performance and a more “balanced” order book during the six months ended June 30, has sparked encouragement that JSE-listed Hulamin would see more positive gains after a “tough few years”. The aluminium products producer on Monday posted a 32% decline in headline earnings a share (Heps) for the period under review; however, normalised Heps showed a 17% rise on the prior period. After implementing a required reinstatement following the implementation of the revised accounting standard, IAS 19r, in 2012, Hulamin recorded Heps and basic earnings a share of 21c, compared with the restated 31c and 36c in the prior corresponding period. Headline earnings fell from R98.2-million in the six months to June 2012, to R66.4-million during the first half of 2013, while normalised...

China exported 52,906.64 mt of aluminum stranded wire, cable, plaited bands and related products in H1, 2013, down 21.58% YoY, according to China Customs. Exports of non-insulated steel-core aluminum stranded wire, cable, plaited bands and related products totaled 33,772.38 mt, down 22.91% YoY, while exports of other non-insulated aluminum stranded wire, cable, plaited bands and related products amounted to 19,134.26 mt, also a drop of 19.13% YoY. Two factors underlie the decline in China’s aluminum wire and cable exports. First, the SHFE/LME aluminum price ratio was high, pushing raw material prices up for Chinese producers. This made Chinese aluminum wire and cable less attractive in overseas market. Second, Low R&D capabilities have weakened domestic producers’ competitiveness against...

ALUMINIUM processor Hulamin on Monday reported a 32% decline in headline earnings per share (HEPS) to 21c in the half-year ended June 30 2013 compared with restated 2012 results. The restatement is required by the new accounting standard IAS 19R, which became effective in the current period and which Hulamin has applied for the first time. Although the revised standard had little impact in the current period, it has had a substantial effect on the restatement of the corresponding prior period. HEPS would have been up 17% compared with the previously reported 2012 results. This material difference arose from the conversion of the Hulamin pension fund from defined benefit to defined contribution in 2012. Turnover increased by 13.1% to R3.6bn on higher sales volumes and a weaker rand,...

20,491 meters of transmission line (=220 kV) was built in H1, 2013, up 23.82% YoY. 10,011 meters of transmission line (=220 kV) was constructed in June, according to China Electricity Council (CEC). Power grid construction began to enter a peak season in June. Investment in power grid construction across China amounted to RMB 165.9 billion in H1, 2013, up 19.07% YoY. However, current power grid construction only reflects order books at aluminum wire and cable producers over the past period. This is because the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) typically purchases wire and cable several months in advance. Producers doubt whether power grid construction will continue to maintain double-digit growth in the future.

A Korean company that has been exporting to and importing from the Philippines is looking for a Filipino partner to start an aluminum foil manufacturing business in the country. In a statement, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said Thoma T.Y. Shinn, who chairs the Korea Importers' Association (KOIMA), noted the absence of an aluminum foil manufacturer in the Philippines despite the popular use of the packaging material, which the country imports. “If we can find a partner here, it will be a big investment. Aluminum is very important because the packaging industry is important in the Philippines. If somebody will produce here, it will be a good industry,” the DTI quoted Shinn, who owns Hanshinn International Corp, as saying. Hanshinn has been exporting to and importing products...

Operating rates at domestic aluminum wire and cable producers averaged 73% in June, up 4 percentage points from May, Shanghai Metals Market’s survey has found. This signals a peak season for aluminum wire and cable sector. Increased investments in power grid construction are boosting order books at domestic aluminum wire and cable producers. Although the number of power grid projects by the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) increased, order books for the rest of the year actually dropped. Wire and cable needed for current power grid construction were ordered earlier this year or even the second half of last year, SMM has learned from some producers. With many producers producing the same products, competition in the sector has become all the more fierce. Many are uncertain whether...
