Aluminum cans help specialty drinks brands expand reach in Brazil

ABRE, the Brazilian Packaging Association, recently reported that the average number of beverage cans used in 2012 per Brazilian consumer rose to 103, a 12% increase from 91 cans used the year before. While many of these cans are for beer or soft drink applications, an increasing number of brands that produce specialty drinks, such as juices, liquors and mixed beverages, are turning to CROWN Embalagens Metálicas da Amazônia S.A. (Crown Brazil), a subsidiary of Crown Holdings, Inc., to drive greater market penetration in the country. For instance, ready-to-drink caipirinhas sold in cans provide a convenient packaging format for indoor and outdoor events and eliminate the need for consumers to purchase separate ingredients or have the necessary mixing and measuring apparatuses. For...

Alcoa looks to expand use of aluminum sheet in cars

Technology developed by Alcoa researchers in Pittsburgh has become the linchpin of the aluminum producer's plan to expand use of the metal from high-end German luxury cars to aluminum-intensive pickup trucks, minivans and other top-selling vehicles. Randall Scheps, the executive in charge of selling Alcoa's aluminum sheet to the automotive market, said automotive demand for the product is forecast to increase fourfold by 2015 and 10 times by 2025. A new process for treating aluminum sheet makes adhesive bonds between the metal and other components last longer. That means aluminum sheet can be used in the structural framework of motor vehicles, Mr. Scheps said during a telephone interview Tuesday. The technology was developed at Alcoa's Technical Center near Upper Burrell. Mr. Scheps said...

Novelis on track to meeting 2020 water reduction target

Global aluminium company Novelis has reduced its water-use intensity by 16% from 2007-2009 average levels, putting it on track to achieve its 25% reduction target by 2020. The process in Novelis' operations that uses the most water is the casting of ingots after remelting recycled materials - something the company has increased dramatically over the last few years. Ingot casting will rise as the company increases its recycling of scrap aluminium, which has the potential to push up Novelis' water-use. To combat this, the company has been working to use water in this process more efficiently, primarily by maximising cooling water re-use. However, according to Novelis, the smelting process, by which primary aluminium is made, is more water-intensive than the recycling process. Therefore, if...

UN report recognises Life Cycle Assessments work of EAFA

A new report, from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has used a number of Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) undertaken by the European Aluminium Foil Association (EAFA), to understand best practice in using LCA as an assessment tool for packaging. The report, produced under the Life Cycle Initiative - a joint organisation of UNEP and the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) - summarises the results of a project designed to consolidate outcomes of existing research on the environmental performance of packaging, namely LCA studies, in order to demonstrate the value of applying LCAs to evaluate environmental impacts for food and beverage packaging. Aluminium foil, with its proven barrier properties against light, gas, moisture and odours has long been at the...

Alcoa edges away from aluminum, reviving stock

Alcoa Inc. isn’t waiting around for the aluminum market to emerge from its interminable slump, because that’s not likely to happen any time soon. Instead, the New York-based company is on a mission to reduce its exposure to the commodity that it was built on. Alcoa’s reanimated stock price suggests that investors are beginning to see the company as more than a bet on aluminum prices – and some analysts believe there may be more gains to come. “We believe that the market is not fully appreciating Alcoa’s solid position in growing value-added and high-margin aluminum products for the aerospace and automotive industries,” Sal Tharani, an analyst at Goldman Sachs, said in a recent note. The stock has advanced about 8 per cent this year and is trading around $9.36 (U.S.). Mr. Tharani says it...

Novelis: optimas gold winner for vision

When Phil Martens joined Novelis Inc. in the spring of 2009 as the company’s president and CEO, the world’s largest manufacturer of rolled aluminum was facing some serious talent management challenges — and the decentralization and lack of leadership was visible to customers. “The customers were demanding one company: They wanted the same quality and same experience across the board,” said Joanne McInnerney, vice president of global talent management. The “litany of human resources deficiencies” ranged the gamut from no career services page on its website to an absence of leadership development or succession planning.Novelis “There was no list of high potentials, no talent reviews, no forum for senior leadership to discuss future leaders, no global head count. Overall there was no way to...

Firms invest $152M, create 700 jobs in Ohio

Gov. John R. Kasich recently announced the approval of assistance for 11 projects set to create 733 jobs and retain 310 jobs statewide. During its monthly meeting, the Ohio Tax Credit Authority reviewed economic development proposals brought to the board by JobsOhio and its regional partners. Collectively, the projects are expected to result in more than $35 million in new payroll, and spur more than $152 million in investment across Ohio, according to officials. One of those projects is in Columbiana County, Kasich officials said. Pennex Aluminum Co. in Leetonia expects to create 65 full-time positions, generating $2.3 million and retaining $3 million in existing payroll as a result of the company's expansion project. Pennex Aluminum is an aluminum part manufacturer specializing in...

OEMs press Alcoa to share aluminum-bonding process

At the request of automakers, Alcoa Inc. is making its patented Alcoa 951 bonding process available to competitors who also supply aluminum to the auto industry. Alcoa 951 coats aluminum to prevent corrosion and prepare the surface for adhesives. It will help automakers produce more structural load-bearing parts made of aluminum. Novelis Inc., another major aluminum supplier, says it can use Alcoa 951 but has its own coating. Automakers are counting on aluminum to help boost fuel economy to meet the government-mandated 54.5-mpg fleet average by 2025. Alcoa expects demand for aluminum parts to double in the next decade. In January, at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Ford Motor Co. is expected to introduce the next-generation F-150 pickup with extensive use of...

2014 downstream aluminium contracts

While primary aluminium supply contracts have been warped by high premiums over the past two years, downstream aluminium product contracts are still more tied to their market’s fundamentals. Primary buyers have had to contend with new types of contract as premiums are now a much larger part of the cost of buying aluminium. Producers pushed for floating-rate premiums in their 2013 contracts last year after spot premiums had climbed to record highs, while uncertainty over next year’s premium levels has lead them to offer both fixed and floating premiums for 2014. But in the downstream space, the structure of supply contracts can still reveal more fundamental trends within the individual markets. Extrusion billet – quarterly, fixed premium As in the primary ingot market, billet consumers do...
