Arabian Gulf states investing on aluminium

From Saudi Arabia to Oman, Arabian Gulf states are grabbing a greater share of the raw materials needed to power economic diversification. Gulf economies last year produced 3.7 million tonnes of aluminium, which is equal to 9 per cent of the world’s total, according to the non-profit Gulf Aluminium Council. With the planned expansions in regional smelters, total production is expected to reach 5 million tonnes by next year, which will be equivalent of about 10 per cent of the world’s primary aluminium production. By 2014, four of the world’s top 10 primary aluminium producers will be based in the Gulf, according to the council. “The smelters in the Gulf region have more global outlook than regional,” said Venkatesan Subramanian, a vice president at the consultancy Frost & Sullivan. “The...

A private player is all set to take over the Aluminium Industries Limited (Alind) here. The factory that sustained a 15-year shutdown saw a ray of hope when present MP N. Peethambara Kurup inaugurated its renovation work about four months ago. The corporation that was owned and operated by a board of directors declared it a “sick industry” in 1998. The employees alleged that the private firm that showed interest in acquiring the firm had signed an MoU, but no agreement was signed with the employees regarding settlement of salaries and allowances since 1998. Meanwhile, the revival committee that supported the takeover of the firm by the private player said it was waiting for the Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction to take a final decision on proceeding further. “The factory,...

Auto mileage standards set off race between steel and aluminium

Higher gas mileage standards that automakers are required to meet by 2025 have set off a race between the steel and aluminium industries. Automakers have been increasingly turning to aluminum as a quick way to make cars lighter and improve gas mileage. But steel is fighting back by developing stronger and lighter material that targets the auto industry. “Steel still will be the dominant material,” said Richard Schultz, a consultant with respected automotive research firm Ducker Worldwide of Troy, Mich. Lighter-weight aluminum is gaining ground on steel but remains a small share of the market. The steel industry now ships about 20 million tons to the auto industry, which will decline by 2025 to about 17 million as aluminum body sheet rises from about 100,000 to 1 million tons in 2020 and...

Artist designs ant hill sculptures with molten aluminum

An anonymous American artist is getting international attention for turning pesky ant hills into intricate, educational sculptures. A video recently posted to YouTube shows how Anthill Art is made – by pouring a gurgling pot of molten aluminum into an ant hill, digging it up and then washing off the dirt. This particular cast, of a fire ant colony, reached a depth of 18 inches and weighs nearly 18 pounds. It’s being auctioned on eBay. "This cast would make an amazing display as an artistic piece for a fireplace mantle or as an educational display for a science classroom or laboratory," the description reads. Since each sculpture involves the destruction of a colony, Anthill Art has been the subject of criticism online. “I disabled comments because I'm sick of your bickering,” reads the...
