Apple’s new Mac Pro uses 74% less aluminum and 84% lighter packaging

Apple has today released its environmental report for its new Mac Pro machine, which details some fairly large savings on power and raw materials. The new device also earns a gold rating from the EPEAT, but that isn’t too surprising as Apple has ‘helped’ the organization rethink how it evaluates products. Despite that retooling, however, the new Mac Pro still puts up some impressive gains in efficiency. For one, it uses 68% less power than the previous generation Mac Pro when at idle. We looked up last year’s model and the idle consumption rates were up around 133.7w on 100v, with the new unit coming in at just 43w. It also uses less materials over all, which isn’t too surprising given that it’s a ton smaller. The new Mac Pro uses 74% less aluminum than the previous version and the...

SPIROL releases Series CL600 & CL610 aluminum compression limiters

As more assemblies change from metal to plastic, Engineers struggle with methods of joining “metal to plastic” or “plastic to plastic” without cracking plastic components. Essentially, metal compression limiters provide “spot” or local reinforcement of plastic components in high-stress joints typically where components mate (so the main housing can be manufactured from lower cost plastic). Compression limiters absorb load generated from a bolt tightened to its recommended value. The plastic is isolated from excessive compressive loads ensuring that the joint remains intact throughout the life of the product. SPIROL offers several different types of compression limiters to meet specific application requirements and assembly methods. The company is replacing a line of machined brass...

Ford gets ready to unveil the aluminum F-150

Ford Motor is putting the F-150 pickup's 37-year winning streak on the line in 2014, with an expected radical shift to aluminum. The new F-150 is expected to use 600 pounds of aluminum, replacing about 1,000 pounds of steel, according to industry consultant Ducker Worldwide. The move accounts for a big chunk of the 750 pounds that Ford has vowed to cut to improve fuel economy. Some experts believe the truck will be able to get about 30 miles per gallon, up from the 17 to 19 mpg of current models. A lot is riding on the change for Ford. The F-150 is not only the best-selling pickup, it has been the best-selling U.S. vehicle of any kind for more than three decades. And it is by far the most profitable vehicle in Ford's lineup. "When you have a vehicle that successful, the company almost...

Sapa aluminium workers in Bedwas await job news

Workers at an aluminium plant near Caerphilly are waiting to see if their jobs are still at risk as the official consultation on its closure ends. Sapa Aluminium began talks with its 132 employees at Bedwas last month. The firm has blamed the move on "significant changes" in market conditions and the need to stay competitive. Earlier this month Business Minister Edwina Hart said talks were to continue in the hope of saving the site. In a letter to assembly members on 3 December she said her officials had been told by Sapa management that negotiations will continue beyond the end of the 45-day consultation period "for as long as is necessary". "My officials outlined the key areas of support available to the company in order to safeguard and maintain an operation at Bedwas," Mrs Hart wrote....

Ford to use military-grade aluminum shielding from US army supplier for new F-150 truck

Ford will use military-grade aluminum shielding borrowed from a US army supplier to launch the new F-150 truck with a suitably butch halo, insiders claim, bringing the much anticipated aluminum-bodied vehicle to the North American International Auto Show next month. The new F-150, expected to borrow heavily from the design of Ford's Atlas Concept truck earlier this year, will mark a switch from the steel body of the best-selling outgoing model to lighter materials in the new version, with the car company said to be pre-emptively working to dismiss suggestions that aluminum is flimsy or weak. Part of that is posing the new F-150 in a suitably macho scene, insiders familiar with Ford's NAIAS plans tell Bloomberg. The car company has supposedly borrowed battlefield-fit aluminum blast...
