Aleris considers expansion in US to meet rising automotive demand

On 13th Jan, Steven Demetriou, Chairman & Chief Executive of Aleris International, said that they are considering the expansion of its automotive aluminum capacity in United States. His positive outlook comes as the aluminum industry is struggling with the low London Metal Exchange (LME) prices, that is close to or below the many smelters' production cost, surplus global output capacity and shortage of scrap metal. The automotive sector is expected to compensate for the sluggish construction and packaging sector. Although automakers have replaced the use of steel with lightweight aluminium and is considered "biggest opportunity since the 1970s". At the Detroit auto show, Ford unveiled its F-150 pick-up truck, that has body and load bed made almost of aluminum. This is the first of its...

KM Packaging Celebrates Milestone

KM Packaging revolutionised the ready meals industry with lidding film for aluminium foil trays in the late 1990s, paving the way for a new generation of cost-effective, freezable and ovenable meals which would subsequently grace dinner tables across the world. Since then KM has been the driving force behind many more class-leading innovations including high-tech anti-fog solutions and precisely laser-perforated films adapted to significantly extend the shelf-life of fresh produce. Since the inception of the Smoothwall Foil packaging concept, KM has worked closely with major suppliers of both the trays and the heat sealing machinery, to ensure that products progress technically as the needs of the food manufacturer become more sophisticated. With the increasingly short period food...

Automakers may be short of aluminium in future due to heavy demand

With automakers' demand for aluminum growing explosively as they seek to improve fuel efficiency, aluminum providers are selling out their automotive capacity almost as fast as they can build new plants, raising the question of whether some car makers could be caught short in the future. The U.S. market for aluminum sheet is expected to be up fivefold this year from 2012 with the development of vehicles like Ford Motor Co's next generation F-150 full-size pickup truck, a more aluminum intensive model that will be shown Monday at the Detroit auto show. Demand is expected to continue its surge as automakers look to slash vehicle weights to boost fuel efficiency, industry executives and analysts said. "The one thing that has proven itself to be accurate is that any forward forecast of the...

New plasma cutter to increase Surtees boats production

Surtees Boats has installed a new ProMax 1800 Plasma Cutter into its Kawerau manufacturing facility in a move to increase production and to meet growing demand for their range of production aluminium boats. Plasma cutting isn’t new to Surtees, the company was one of the first New Zealand aluminium boat builders to install a plasma cutter over 15 years ago, but the new machine is significantly more advanced than the previous version. “The new cutter will allow us to increase the speed and accuracy of the aluminium cutting process by 28 percent. That equates to more boats leaving the factory enroute to dealers and customers,” says Surtees Boats Managing Director Phil Sheaff. The new equipment is a lot bigger than the previous machine used and boasts a sophisticated extractor system that...

Jaguar SUV concept points to an all-aluminium future

Jaguar Land Rover is being coy about whether we’ll ever see the Jaguar C-X17 again. The company unveiled its first SUV concept in Frankfurt in September. Last month, a slightly altered version made its Asia debut at the Guangzhou Motor Show, ahead of its preview in Hong Kong. The latest version of the concept is different in two ways, according to Bob Grace, president of Jaguar Land Rover China. It has five rather than four seats and, to appeal to Chinese tastes, it has gold-coloured bodywork and a tan leather interior. While the introduction of an SUV to a premium carmaker’s line-up has proven controversial in the past – think Porsche’s Cayenne when it was launched, or Bentley’s concept EXP 9F – in Jaguar’s case, it appears to work. Design elements such as the XJ’s large grille and...

New Samsung Galaxy S5 concept features aluminum casing

A new Samsung Galaxy S5 concept image comes with a 5.25-inch screen display and Note 3's faux leather casing as inspired by the controversial patent leak. Samsung leaked some patents last week that inspired some creative thinkers to design renders of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S5 and Note 4. Designer Ivo Maric imagined the Samsung Galaxy S5 to have the same size as Galaxy S4 but the screen size will be increased by further narrowing the bezels. Mixed emotions may be felt as the render pictures the handset to have an aluminum casing but faux leather covers Samsung's removable battery just like Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Lastly, Ivo Maric depicts a smartphone without a Home button. The Samsung Galaxy S5 concept image is based on U.S. Patent filings by Samsung and is not the real deal until...

Aluminium wheels industry to grow at 8.48%

The global automotive aluminium wheels industry will grow at a CAGR of 8.48% over the period 2012-2016, says a new report. One of the key factors contributing to this market growth is the increasing demand for vehicles across the world. The global automotive aluminium wheels industry has also been witnessing an increasing manufacturing of wheels in the APAC region. However, the availability of other lightweight wheel material could pose a challenge to the growth of this market. “ Many large global firms are nowadays outsourcing manufacturing activities to low-cost destinations in the APAC region to reduce manufacturing costs,” said an analyst from Research and Markets, which published the report. “In fact, many automotive manufacturers have started product development operations in...

Showa Denko Group to acquire aluminum can maker in Vietnam

Showa Denko and its wholly owned subsidiary Showa Aluminum Can Corporation (SAC) have reached agreement with major shareholders of Rexam-Hanacans Joint Stock Company (Hanacans), of Vietnam, to acquire 91.75% of shares in the company. Hanacans is manufacturing and selling aluminum beverage cans in Vietnam. In 1971, SAC became the first company in Japan to manufacture and sell aluminum beer cans. Since then, the company has supplied high-quality products to various beverage makers in Japan, expanding its business in line with the market growth. In recent years, however, the domestic market for beverage cans, including aluminum cans, has matured due partly to the dwindling population. Thus, there is no prospect of major growth of the aluminum can market in Japan. On the other hand, the...

Aluminium remains vital for automotive lightweighting

Delegates at the Future Automotive Body Structures seminar at the Heritage Motor Centre in Gaydon, Warwickshire, found that aluminium still has a surprisingly prominent role. Rachel Lawler reports. Fifty per cent of all the patents filed in 1896 were related to bicycles. That’s more than 14,000 new inventions related to bikes in one year alone. Of course we’re now living in a different world, a world where the car is king, but the automotive industry could learn a lot from the two-wheeled vehicle. Bob Mustard, Managing Director at Stalcom Automotive Technologies Ltd, in Worcestershire UK, considered the impact aluminium had on the bicycle industry and wondered if the material could have a similar affect on the modern car. For him, aluminium was a better direction than some other...

According to FoneArena, the Ascend W3 is expected to be launched at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week. Like the W2, the device is believed to feature a mid-range spec sheet, although it is said to have a larger and higher-res display – possibly around 4.5-inches and HD (1280x720px) resolution. Unlike Huawei’s previous Windows Phones, however, the Ascend W3 will reportedly feature a thin aluminium body, as we reported in September. It is said to incorporate some...
