Automotive technology roadmap to guide EEV development

HIGH technological capability is predominant to realise the nation’s aspiration to develop the country as the hub for energy-efficient vehicle (EEV) manufacturing. Malaysia now possesses the fundamental technologies to support the development of the EEV industry, acquired from the nation’s involvement in the conventional automotive manufacturing thus far. However, Malaysia still lacks some critical EEV-specific technological requirements. Malaysia Automotive Technology Roadmap (MATR), one of the six blueprints recently revealed, will serve as the guidelines in steering the automotive community in the nation’s adoption and adaption of and innovative approach towards EEV manufacturing. Relating to the entire automotive ecosystem, MATR identifies the relevant technologies that are needed to...

Audi biggest models to be biggest losers

The Audi A8 limousine and Audi Q7 SUV, the German brand’s biggest models, will lose significant weight for their next-generation models. Audi has confirmed the A8 will partly use the hybrid carbonfibre and aluminium construction being used by the new Lamborghini Huracan and its R8 supercar twin due in 2015. The new lightweight construction will not feature in the next-generation Q7 due in early 2015, but the rival to the BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne will still make significant weight savings. “The Q7 will be a steel and aluminium combination, though it will make big steps in weight – up to 300kg,” said Audi chief technical officer Dr Ulrich Hackenberg. The reduction in mass isn’t as impressive as the 400kg-odd saving made by the latest Range Rover in its switch to a new all-aluminium body,...

Aluminum, steel demand at Risk if Honda, Ford cut back auto production

Steel – and, increasingly – aluminum demand could be hit this quarter if automakers cut back on production. Auto inventory levels have soared over recent months as frigid temperatures and winter storms in the past six weeks have slowed retail sales and showroom traffic, Reuters reported in a recent article. As a result, inventories of unsold vehicles at dealers have soared, triggering a new round of steep discounts by carmakers and their dealers. The article advises that some of the heftiest discounts are being offered by Ford and General Motors dealers on the 2014 Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado full-size pickup trucks, usually two of their strongest sellers. Unusually, Japanese automakers Toyota and Honda have also joined in the discounts, a step they usually shy away from...

Carbon-Aluminium hybrids to be a part of next generation Audis

Radical new carbon-fibre as well as aluminium’s hybrid pieces will soon be a part of the upcoming full generation of Audis. Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, Audi’s engineering boss, admitted that the new technology almost ready to debut in public in the Lamborghini Huracan at Geneva Motor Show next week, is headed across the top end of the Audi range. “This is a chassis development with a combination of both engineering teams and you will definitely see Audi use this technology.” The first Audi to use the hybrid pieces is the all-new R8. Initially it was decided the R8 would be launched later this year, but its release has held until 2015 because sources reveal Dr Hackenberg was not very happy with the development of this car compared to the Huracan, its sister car. Large Ford stores say cost of aluminum body shop will surpass $70,000

Michigan Ford dealer Ed Joliffe has been calculating the cost of getting his body shop ready for the 2015 aluminum F-150 pickup, and finds the numbers sobering. "It's going to cost anywhere from $50,000 to $100,000. That's a hell of a chunk," says Joliffe, who owns Gorno Ford in suburban Detroit. "I don't think it's for the faint of heart. All the small shops won't be able to touch it." He figures it could take five to seven years to recoup that investment, which he deems essential to stay in the body shop business. Ford is targeting dealers with large body shops as it attempts to organize the F-150 aluminum body repair system. For those dealers, the investment will exceed the $30,000 to $50,000 Ford has cited for a single repair bay. Like Joliffe, many dealers say the cost could be...
