Folded aluminium kiosks by Make Architects pop-up in London

London architecture studio Make has designed contractible metal street kiosks for the Canary Wharf ice sculpting festival. Based on the concept of origami and modelled from folded paper prototypes, the kiosks feature hinged aluminium panels that allow the unit to open and close like a fan. A counterweight system controlled by a winch allows the front of the kiosk to be raised upwards from the base, revealing a plywood skin covered interior with a waterproof membrane. The folded section forms a canopy to shelter those working inside, while a resilient powder-coating finish protects the façade from vandalism. The kiosks can be adapted to suit the needs of the vendor, designed for a multitude of purposes; from serving coffee, to information points, to a spot for DJs at events. Two of the...

Steel Industry concerned about automakers move towards the aluminum industry

For nearly a century, Ford’s River Rouge factory and its neighboring steel mill have worked in close harmony to produce some of America’s most popular vehicles, from the Model A to the F-150 pickup truck. But ever since Ford announced last month that it would make the body of its new F-150 mostly out of aluminum, that steel maker, which was spun off by Ford in 1989, has faced the unsettling prospect that its longtime partner is drifting away. Carmakers’ shift to aluminum has raised apprehension among steel makers, which have been fighting an increasingly uphill battle simply to maintain their business. Now, they are trying to respond, making lighter, stronger steel in a bid to retain one of their most important customers, the automakers. Steel makers, which have been riding a wave of...

Cost cutting helps Hulamin lift its 2013 earnings

HULAMIN, the aluminium products maker, says further cost-cutting and efficiency gains in the year ended December will position the group for growth and improved profitability. The company said on Monday that normalised earnings were up 251%, with headline earnings per share (HEPS) increasing by 128%. The share had risen 5.26% by midmorning trade. The cost savings included reducing employee headcount by 10%. At the same time the KwaZulu-Natal-based group made efficiency gains from its manufacturing excellence programme. But it said declining cost competitiveness and margin pressure was exacerbated by rampant input cost increases, supply disruptions, and imported rolled and extruded products that did not have tariff protection. This had prompted a revalidation of growth assumptions along...

Kaiser Aluminum: managed with mettle

With backlogs at Boeing and Airbus Group at record levels, the boom in commercial-airplane manufacturing is expected to continue for some time. That's good news for Kaiser Aluminum, a maker of lightweight aluminum plate used in commercial planes. Kaiser, based in Foothill Ranch, Calif., is a dominant player in the market, along with Alcoa (AA) and Constellium (CSTM), and is well positioned to benefit from rising demand. Kaiser also is a leader in making extruded aluminum for car parts, such as anti-lock brakes and bumper systems, where demand has been strong, as well. Despite healthy end markets, Kaiser has run into difficulties lately, as a glut of inventory for aluminum plate has formed in the aerospace supply chain. That has put pressure on pricing, which is weighing on the business....

The Wall Street Journal reported last week that GM has signed contracts with aluminum makers Alcoa and Novelis to supply its next generation of full-sized pickups, due by late 2018. The suppliers are working to increase aluminum sheet production to accommodate GM's next-gen pickup, the paper reported, citing unnamed sources. A GM spokesman declined to comment. The 2015 F-150, which Ford is expected to launch around December, will shed up to 700 pounds from the outgoing model. Ford is...
