Increased knowledge about the light metal is driving the use of aluminium solutions, and Sapa is one of the educators leading the way. The company provided more than 15,000 hours of technical training last year alone to participants worldwide. Most of the 15,000 hours of technical training are offered free of charge to designers, technicians, engineers, product developers and architects across all industries. Only in a handful of countries in Europe are participants required to pay a small fee according to government regulations. The tutoring takes place in Sapa’s so-called Profile Academy. The company hosted about 30 events last year, including those arranged by former Hydro locations. Sapa and Hydro merged into a new joint venture in September 2013. These two-day events were organized...

According to a survey made by a Shanghai Metals Market, it is expected that the production rate at the aluminum fabricators in China will have a lit bit of change in the month of April. It is expected that the average operating rate at the Chinese extrusion producers will be 64% in the month of April quite in level with the rate in March. But the rate was down from average rate of 70% last year, a latest survey by SMM revealed. It is believed, the YOY drop in this rate is due to an inactive property sector. The lending rates for property- related business enterprises have been tightened by banks. This has made the aluminum extrusion traders and producers more cautious while they supply their goods to the property developers. As a result, the low housing market is forcing the construction...

Henkel and Ball Corporation collaborated to launch a new, lighter weight industrial aluminum aerosol can for the popular beauty care brand, Fa. Ball manufactures the new, lighter extruded aluminum can using revolutionary metal technology, which utilizes recycled aluminum to create a metal alloy that exhibits increased strength and allows lightweighting of the container without affecting package integrity. This breakthrough technology allows Ball to lightweight its extruded aluminum aerosol packaging by as much as 10 percent, with further lightweighting expected in the future. "As global sustainability leaders, Ball and Henkel continually strive to improve our environmental impact while responsibly running our businesses and increasing stakeholder value," said Michael Feldser, chief...

The regional share of North American and Western European regions declined during the latter half of this period. Transportation, building & construction and packaging are the three major end-use sectors and account for over 63% of the global aluminium usage. The aluminium industry is expected to benefit from light weighting in the automotive sector, the need to reduce carbon footprint across all sectors and growing...

The aluminum industry expects the automotive sector will generate the biggest wave of new demand since manufacturers started using the lightweight metal to make beverage cans. For us, it’s equivalent to the invention of the (aluminum) can which was introduced to many markets about 50 years ago,” said Aluminum Association of Canada president Jean Simard Friday. Automaker giant Ford plans on reducing the weight of its F-150 pickup truck by increasing the amount of aluminum used to 315 kilograms from 45 kg on current models. Simard called the move a “game-changer,” prompting competitor General Motors to become less reliant on heavier steel for some of its models. Aluminum producers have faced a rough few years with high inventories causing prices to crater. But industry leaders say that the...

Aluworks Limited, an aluminium products manufacturing company, is to raise its annual production capacity from the existing 30,000 tonnes to 50,000 by the middle of the year. This follows the installation of a new cold-rolling mill to replace the existing one. The current mill has been in operation for the past 30 years. The Sales and Marketing Manager of Aluworks, Mr Christian Opare-Larbi, said the switch to the new mill would also help improve the efficiency of operations and the quality of products. He said this in an interview with the Daily Graphic at the solo exhibition of made-in-Ghana products in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. "The way forward now is for us to grow our traditional market, which is the West African sub-region, so that we can export more products there," Mr Opare-Larbi,...

Over 150 fleets are specifying 67,000 Ultra ONE™ wheels since they were introduced. In Hungary, Alcoa is investing $13 million in its wheel plant in Székesfehérvár to meet rising European demand for its...

A recent study at the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IFEU) in Germany, disproves the common consumer belief, namely that a disposable product has a far greater environmental impact than a reusable solution and shows that aluminium household foil is a sustainable option that performs no worse and in some cases even better than the reusable plastic lunchbox. Today consumers require the packaging for their homemade snacks to be convenient and eco-friendly, as well as providing proper protection. Until now aluminium foil’s supposed poorer environmental performance has made it an "off limits” material, even leading to bans of aluminium household foil in some kindergartens and schools in some European countries. The reusable rigid plastic box, on the other hand, is commonly...

The aluminum producer Aleris, headquartered in Cleveland, has completed its acquisition of Nichols Aluminum LLC, a producer of aluminum sheet for the transportation, building and construction, machinery and equipment, consumer durables, and electrical industries in North America. In making the deal, Aleris says the acquisition will provide it with greater efficiency and flexibility to serve customers. Nichols, which uses aluminum scrap grades in its reverberatory furnaces, has two production facilities in Davenport, Iowa; a facility in Decatur, Ala.; and a facility in Lincolnshire, Ill. Nichols says that it has a large recycled-content percentage in its aluminum 3105 and 3004A alloys products. The deal was first announced on Feb. 10, 2014, and Aleris agreed to pay 110 million in an...

Unions have described the loss of nearly 100 jobs at a Doncaster company that was supplying aluminium frames to the construction industry as a “bitter blow”. Wilson Field, administrators of Norking Aluminium, says it has failed to find a buyer for the company, and so has been forced to make all 98 staff redundant. It says that despite having a healthy order book, the company had experienced cash flow problems and in particular had tax arrears which a Time to Pay arrangement with HMRC had failed to resolve. Insolvency practitioner Lisa Hogg said: “The directors sought our advice after a proposed finance package fell through. At this stage there were few options available for us other than to seek a new owner and despite our succeeding in finding several parties with an interest in the...

AEROBAL, the International Organisation of Aluminium Aerosol Container Manufacturers, reported a record result for 2013. With output rising by some two per cent to more than seven billion cans, the industry continued its upward trend. The industry managed to top the major seven billion mark despite economic turbulence worldwide and a slowdown in growth in several of the largest emerging markets in Asia and South America. That means aluminium cans account for nearly 50 per cent of the total worldwide output of aerosol cans. AEROBAL Secretary General Gregor Spengler says the further prospects for this modern packaging material are quite positive even though the global economic environment has become more difficult. “Of course, in the current economic situation, it is not easy to give a...

The manufacturers of aluminium, plastic and laminate tubes belonging to the European Tube Manufacturers Association (ETMA) managed once more to achieve growth of one per cent even in the economically difficult year of 2013. The output of ETMA members in 2013 totalled almost 10.5 billion tubes, thus confirming the stable upward trend in place since 2010. Market growth is slightly higher than the growth rates for the European gross domestic product, European industrial production, and private consumption. ETMA Secretary General Gregor Spengler was more than pleased with these results: “The long-term stable trend for tubes in a still difficult economic climate is what makes us so confident. But new records are not really what we are after. We are more interested in positioning the tube...
