The Global Aluminium Industry outlook by product/sector to 2023
Aluminium usage across the world increased from 39 million tonnes in 2003 to 63.7 million tonnes in 2013 at a CAGR of 5%. This growth was driven primarily by the emerging market economies, in particular China. The regional share of North American and Western European regions declined during the latter half of this period.
Transportation, building & construction and packaging are the three major end-use sectors and account for over 63% of the global aluminium usage. The aluminium industry is expected to benefit from light weighting in the automotive sector, the need to reduce carbon footprint across all sectors and growing awareness of the benefits of recycled aluminium.
Aluminium usage is expected to grow at about 4.5% per annum between 2013 and 2023 to reach 99.3 million tonnes. However, the supply of primary aluminium is expected to take a different course shifting from a state of surplus to a potentially deficit situation.
