KAP Minerals and Cymat sign MoU to develop Canadian scandium-aluminium alloy supply chain

KAP Minerals and Cymat Technologies are exploring a partnership to produce scandium-aluminium master alloy in Ontario, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding. The partnership would use scandium oxide from KAP’s Kapuskasing critical minerals project and Cymat’s aluminium-processing technology to produce alloys for aerospace, defence and manufacturing applications. To know the global production, demand and consumption forecasts of aluminium extrusions, explore our report " The World of Aluminium Extrusions to 2035 " Scandium-aluminium alloys can improve strength, performance and weldability while reducing weight. The companies aim to use the proposed venture to establish a domestic supply chain, converting Canadian critical minerals into value-added industrial materials....

Nearly 100 jobs go as aluminium company folds

Unions have described the loss of nearly 100 jobs at a Doncaster company that was supplying aluminium frames to the construction industry as a “bitter blow”. Wilson Field, administrators of Norking Aluminium, says it has failed to find a buyer for the company, and so has been forced to make all 98 staff redundant. It says that despite having a healthy order book, the company had experienced cash flow problems and in particular had tax arrears which a Time to Pay arrangement with HMRC had failed to resolve. Insolvency practitioner Lisa Hogg said: “The directors sought our advice after a proposed finance package fell through. At this stage there were few options available for us other than to seek a new owner and despite our succeeding in finding several parties with an interest in the...

Worldwide Aluminium Aerosol Cans Production Tops Seven Billion

AEROBAL, the International Organisation of Aluminium Aerosol Container Manufacturers, reported a record result for 2013. With output rising by some two per cent to more than seven billion cans, the industry continued its upward trend. The industry managed to top the major seven billion mark despite economic turbulence worldwide and a slowdown in growth in several of the largest emerging markets in Asia and South America. That means aluminium cans account for nearly 50 per cent of the total worldwide output of aerosol cans. AEROBAL Secretary General Gregor Spengler says the further prospects for this modern packaging material are quite positive even though the global economic environment has become more difficult. “Of course, in the current economic situation, it is not easy to give a...

General Motors’ Magnesium alloy VSC machine completes first trial run

General Motors and the GM China Advanced Technical Center in Shanghai announced today the first trial run of the facility’s new Vertical Squeeze Casting machine, the first of its kind in the world designed for developing next-generation magnesium castings. GM says the VSC machine will make it easier to manufacture vehicle parts from magnesium alloy, which is lighter than aluminium and will help improve fuel economy through reduced weight. Magnesium alloy is the lightest metal currently available for mass production of automotive materials, with magnesium parts being on average 30 percent lighter than a part made from aluminum alloy. The VSC machine was designed through a joint collaboration by GM’s lightweight materials research teams in Detroit and Shanghai. It is designed to improve...

Boeing, Cupertino to 'explore weaponisation of Apple technologies'

Boeing and Apple will work together to "weaponise" Apple technology, after the aerospace giant found aluminium-milling techniques developed by Apple to build the MacBook Air's case result in a stronger, more versatile aircraft wings than it is possible to create with its own manufacturing practices. “One of my team dropped their MacBook air and its screen shattered,” Boeing's head of speculative engineering Rolf Apilo told The Reg. “We'd often remarked that the Air looked like the 'trailing edge' of a plane’s wing. That's the rear edge of the wing that, like the MacBook Air, tapers to a thin wedge.” “Trailing edges must endure tremendous stresses including very high frequency vibration and rapidly changing temperature. So for a joke we decided to test the broken MacBook in one of our...
