Aluminum Ford F-150 remains on track, Hinrichs says

In response to Morgan Stanley’s concerns about potential delays, Ford Americas chief Joe Hinrichs said the new aluminum-bodied F-150 truck remains on track for its introduction later this year. Ford is retooling two factories to make the pickup, part of a plan this year to add 16 new models in North America. The company says its new F-150 is about 700 pounds lighter than the steel version it will replace. “Everything is on schedule and everything is going as planned” with the F-150 introduction, Hinrichs told reporters today at the automaker’s headquarters. “I’m very confident in this vehicle,” he said. The company had previously said that it would lose production of more than 90,000 of its F-Series pickups, its best-selling and most profitable model, as it retools factories for the new...

Operating rate at Chinese aluminum wire and cable producers slides to 59.11% in May 2014

Average operating rate at Chinese aluminum wire and cable producers slid to 59.11% in May, Shanghai Metals Market survey showed. Some producers cut output since demand from the power sector did not grow markedly, while others rejected some orders as banks have tightened lending. Both factors sliced 4.35 percentage points off April’s average operating rate, SMM learnt. Although the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) announced bid winners in May, the immediate boost for orders at surveyed wire and cable producers was limited. This is because delivery deadline is months later or as late as the end of this year. Cash-starved SMEs, in particular, are focusing their marketing on the housing and infrastructure sectors against payment delays from the SGCC.

Aluminium sheet market on cusp of big growth

ALUMINIUM giants Alcoa and Novelis spent decades wooing Detroit’s vehicle makers to toss out their heavy steel vehicle bodies and overhaul their factories in order to mass produce vehicles made out of lighter aluminium. This year, with Ford Motor ’s launch of its new aluminium-intensive F-150 truck, they are finally reaping the benefits of that long campaign, a once-a-generation shift in demand for an industry struggling with weak metal demand. Their triumphant moment is being marred, however. A handful of up-and-coming rivals are riding their coattails into an industry that could be worth $10bn in a decade. Since Ford unveiled the truck’s new design, Constellium has announced plans to build a US body sheet plant while Aleris and Wise Metals are considering a foray into the burgeoning US...
