Coca-Cola wants more done on aluminum waits as costs run high

The London Metal Exchange hasn’t done enough to reduce the time it takes to withdraw aluminum from warehouses, said William Hovis, who helps oversee Coca-Cola Co.’s purchases of the metal. Hovis, chief procurement officer at the company’s bottling investment group, echoed concerns from other aluminum buyers such as MillerCoors LLC after lengthy wait times at LME storage facilities led to inflated rent charges. The surcharge added to the price of metal for immediate delivery on the LME, known as the premium, is a “significant cost” for the world’s biggest beverage company, according to Hovis. Coca-Cola supports the LME’s proposal to limit rents at some warehouses, he said. “The LME has taken good steps forward, yet we don’t think they’ve gone far enough,” he said at the CRU World Aluminium...

Trek adds aluminum-frame models to Émonda road bike line

Trek Bicycle is expanding its Émonda road bike line — which is highlighted by its super-light Émonda carbon frames introduced last year — to include a new aluminum frame model, the Émonda ALR. Trek did not release pricing information but said the line brings Émonda features to an "aluminum price point." The ALR is still quite light, with Trek claiming a 56cm frame weighs 1,050 grams. A complete bike with Shimano 105 parts comes in at a claimed 18.77 pounds. The frames are made with Trek's "Invisible Weld Technology," which is said to use less material for a lighter connection that is also smooth aesthetically. The frame tubes are hydroformed 300 Series Alpha Aluminum. The bikes have full carbon forks and have Trek's integrated speed and cadence sensor, DuoTrap S. The bikes use Trek's H2...

Hindalco slips on weak performance by Novelis

Shares of aluminium major Hindalco fell over 3 per cent on Wednesday after its US subsidiary Novelis reported weak results. A 20 per cent drop in operating profits during the March quarter dampened investor sentiment as the subsidiary brings in around two-third of Hindalco’s consolidated revenues and one-third of the company’s profits. The fall in profits at the world's largest producer of rolled aluminium products was on account of three main factors. One, a strong dollar led to a sharp decline in regional metal premiums in its main markets such as Brazil and Europe thus resulting in losses to the tune of $28 million. This is an ongoing concern for the company and may continue to dampen the profits. Two, there was a loss of $37 million due to aluminium price lag. This happens on fixed...

Southwest Aluminum to fill aluminum auto body sheet vacancy in China

Southwest Aluminum (Group) will start mass production on its self-developed aluminum automotive body sheet (ABS) in H2 2016, with annual capacity expected at 5,000 tonnes, local media reported. Some Sino-foreign and Chinese brand car manufacturers have shown intention of buying aluminum ABS from Southwest Aluminum (Group), the media added.

Gulf Extrusions sees demand for aluminium products rising in Egypt

The United Arab Emirates's Gulf Extrusions, one of the largest aluminium product makers in the Gulf, said on Wednesday it would set up a commercial office in Egypt before the end of the year to take advantage of a growing market boosted by housing sector demand. The firm, part of the Al Ghurair Group, said it could see the market for extruded aluminium products in Egypt rising from 85,000 tonnes a year to around 300,000 tonnes in coming years, largely because of the need to build one million housing units a year there until 2020. "There will be a big leap and it will drive the demand for extruded aluminium products in the region as well," general manager Modar al-Mekdad told Reuters on the sidelines of the CRU Aluminium Conference in Dubai. "We already sell our products there through our...

China A356 aluminum alloy operating rate rises to 63.2% in April

The average operating rate at 15 Chinese A356 aluminum alloy producers rose from a month ago to 63.2% in April, SMM’s latest survey showed. Output at those surveyed increased 4,000 tonnes month-on-month to 110,600 tonnes, SMM data showed. Processing fees for A356 aluminum alloy changed little from March at 700 yuan ($114)/tonne (delivery to factory). Operating rate at A356 aluminum alloy producers is expected to continue growing slightly in May since the increase in orders at aluminum wheel rim manufacturers has not been impressive.

Liu Libin, Chairman of Xingfa Aluminum, holds positive views of the aluminum demand outlook, citing acceleration of China’s urbanization process, drive for lighter car body, and China’s "One Belt and One Road" initiative. Novelis reports fiscal year 2015 results

Novelis, the world leader in aluminum rolling and recycling, today reported net income of $148 million for fiscal year 2015, a 42 percent increase from the $104 million reported in fiscal 2014. Excluding certain tax-effected items, net income increased four percent to $161 million in fiscal 2015. Adjusted EBITDA grew two percent to $902 million in fiscal 2015 compared to the $885 million reported in fiscal 2014. The increase was primarily driven by higher shipments, favorable product mix due to a strategic shift to grow automotive shipments and cost benefits from using a higher percentage of recycled metal inputs. Partially offsetting these gains were higher costs associated with the start-up and support of new capacity, lower pricing in some Asian markets, as well as unfavorable foreign...

Researchers develop a faster welding technique for aluminium auto parts

Researchers from the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in partnership with General Motors, Alcoa and TWB Company LLC have come up with a new technique for processing aluminium for automobiles that will enhance the speed, scale, quality and consistency required in the auto industry. The new technique promises to reduce production time and costs for creating strong yet strong automotive parts and has been reported in the May issue of the Journal of Materials. Friction stir welding or FSW is a new joining technique that can be used to join aluminium sheets of varying thickness ten times faster that any former FSW technique providing speeds that can meet high-volume assembly requirements. "We looked at the barriers preventing the use of more lightweight alloys in...

Next BMW 5 and 3 Series to benefit from lightweight tech

The next generation of BMW’s 5 Series and 3 Series will be able to use the advanced carbonfibre and aluminium construction techniques from the forthcoming 7 Series, according to comments from senior company insiders. The next 7 Series’ chassis mixes carbonfibre, aluminium and high-tensile steel in a manner in which, BMW claims, “no other company could produce right now”. The techniques wipe 40kg from the bare body and the use of aluminium in other key areas increases the total saving to 200kg, although extra sound deadening and safety kit reduce the net gain to 130kg. However, a senior 7 Series project insider told Autocar: “Arguably, the biggest achievement with the 7 Series is the industrialisation of these processes. We have learned many lessons from i3 and the carbonfibre components...
