The leading South Korean aluminium foil producer, Dong-IL Aluminium Co., has reportedly accelerated its production capacity to cater to the ever-growing demand in the electric vehicle (EV) sector, especially in the United States and Europe. The company will supply more aluminium foil to local EV battery makers.
Dong-IL Aluminium has recently announced that it is adding three new rolling mills to the existing five at its Cheongju plant by 2025, aiming to become the largest foil producer in Korea. Each rolling mill can produce 350,000 units of aluminium foil for EVs in a year.
“Demand for the high quality of aluminum foil has explosively grown as EV makers have been in a hurry to obtain batteries with both higher safety and energy density to offer longer driving ranges,” Park Chan Gyu, the chief executive officer of Dong-IL Aluminium said in his interview with the Maeil Business Newspaper.
He continued saying, “We aim to post 1 trillion won in sales by 2030 by doubling the production capacity with large-scale investment in the facility.”
Dong-IL Aluminium has finalised an investment of 220 billion won ($164.89 million) in building production and infrastructure in Cheongju, south of Seoul.
Established in 1989, the company is specialised in producing aluminium foil, a critical material used in food packaging to automobile. At present, Dong-IL Aluminium supplies aluminium foil to South Korea’s top battery makers, including LG Energy Solution Limited, Samsung SDI Co., and SK On Co., Ltd.
Park added, “Thinner aluminum foil help to make batteries lighter and highly capable, and we have a competitive edge in surface uniformity that measures the energy density and reliability in the foil.”
