Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (Alba) is assessing how its energy strategy could evolve through 2050 as energy markets, fuel dynamics and decarbonisation requirements continue to change. A new strategic study by the Bahrain Centre for Strategic, International and Energy Studies (Derasat) examines the pathways available to the aluminium producer, focusing on the balance between costs, emissions and energy security.
{alcircleadd}Titled “Alba’s Energy Transition and Decarbonisation Pathways,” the study provides an integrated framework for Alba’s long-term energy transformation. It assesses the implications of evolving energy sources, contractual structures, and emerging technologies for operational costs, carbon footprint, and energy security amid shifting global liquefied natural gas (LNG) markets and evolving domestic fuel dynamics.
Mapping Alba’s energy pathways through 2050
The study uses advanced modelling and scenario-based analysis to assess potential energy pathways for Alba through 2050. It examines alternative energy sources, contracting mechanisms and technology options, and their implications for costs, emissions and supply security while accounting for LNG price volatility.
The study delivers strategic insights to strengthen Alba’s decision-making across energy diversification, operational and financial resilience, and long-term competitiveness. It also provides actionable recommendations to advance emission-reduction goals while safeguarding supply reliability.

Dr. Abdulla Isa Alabbasi, Director of the Energy and Environment Studies programme at Derasat, supervised the study and led the research team. He said, "The study applies an advanced modelling framework to assess future scenarios through 2050 and examine the implications of alternative energy sources, contracting mechanisms, and technology options for costs, emissions, and supply security, while accounting for LNG price volatility. This approach provides a robust analytical foundation for long-term strategic decision-making and supports an effective balance between economic efficiency, sustainability, and energy security."
For Alba, the energy transition involves not only reducing emissions but also maintaining reliable energy supplies and strengthening long-term resilience. The study’s recommendations therefore focus on energy efficiency and diversification alongside operational and financial resilience, while supporting Alba’s emission-reduction goals and supply reliability.
