Denmark's offshore wind auction set to fulfil entire national electricity demand

AL Circle

Denmark launched a significant offshore wind tender this week, potentially granting up to 10 GW of capacity. This could cover the nation's electricity needs and pave the way for producing renewable hydrogen and other eco-friendly fuels. The effectiveness of the auction's design in attracting investors and fulfilling such substantial capacity remains to be observed.

Presently, Denmark boasts nearly 3 GW of offshore wind capacity. With the launch of the new Danish offshore auction, the goal is to integrate an additional 6 GW of offshore wind power into the grid. The auction will encompass six wind farm areas: three in the North Sea, two in the Kattegat, and one in the Baltic Sea.

Developers are allowed to install a greater wind capacity in their designated areas than initially outlined by the Government. This surplus capacity can be utilised to produce renewable hydrogen and other environmentally friendly fuels. The Danish State has projected that this initiative could lead to the establishment of 10 GW of offshore wind power. This is a significant stride forward as the country endeavours to deploy substantial volumes to meet Europe's energy security and climate objectives while capitalising on economies of scale.

The upcoming auction holds promise for Denmark and the broader region, potentially yielding significant value. Recent studies indicate that it could spur investments totalling over €13 billion, with the construction phase expected to create approximately 12,000 jobs. However, certain aspects of the auction design pose challenges that might discourage potential investors.

One such challenge is using uncapped negative bidding to allocate the sites. This approach could increase costs for wind farm developers and potentially result in decreased wind energy development.

Despite these challenges, the auction has positive aspects. It incorporates enhanced pre-qualification criteria, which establish essential social and environmental standards. These criteria, including provisions for human rights compliance and measures to combat social exploitation, are not just regulations but a strong commitment to fostering fair competition with non-European counterparts. This emphasis on social and environmental responsibility should reassure stakeholders about the auction's integrity.

Moreover, the auction introduces an innovative approach to State involvement. The Danish government will co-own 20 per cent of each wind farm, which could positively affect project stability and long-term investment prospects.

Offshore installations face relentless environmental challenges, particularly for wind turbines situated at sea. The relentless onslaught of waves, storms, and salty, humid winds can wreak havoc on exposed components, leading to severe corrosion. Opting for aluminium over traditional steel can significantly prolong the lifespan of these critical parts while simultaneously cutting down on maintenance costs.

Structural aluminium components are ideal for offshore applications, including wind turbine landing platforms, transformer stations, and lighting solutions. Extruded aluminium is highly effective in offshore transformer station climate shields. To learn more, delve into AL Circle's latest industry-focused report, "The World of ALuminium Extrusions - Industry Forecast to 2030". Aluminium's lightweight nature and inherent corrosion resistance ensure prolonged durability, easy installation, minimal maintenance requirements, and reduced reliance on other materials.
