Chris Cooter visited CSIR–Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology along with officials from the Canadian High Commission to discuss collaboration in critical minerals, sustainable resource processing, and advanced metallurgical technologies.

The Canadian delegation met with CSIR-IMMT Director Ramanuj Narayan and senior scientists of the institute to explore opportunities for scientific and technological cooperation in critical minerals research and processing.
Dr Narayan outlined the institute’s international engagement initiatives, including the Joint Declaration of Intent signed with the University of Saskatchewan for joint research and academic exchange programmes.

Kali Sanjay presented the activities of the Centre of Excellence on Critical Minerals established at CSIR-IMMT by the Ministry of Mines. The presentation covered ongoing research, technology development, and human resource training related to critical minerals.
During the discussions, both sides reviewed opportunities for collaboration in research partnerships, technology transfer, technical training, and supply-chain development linked to minerals used in clean energy technologies, electric mobility, advanced manufacturing, and strategic industries.

Officials from both sides said India and Canada are strengthening ties in the critical minerals sector as global demand rises for materials used in clean energy and advanced manufacturing. Canada brings large critical mineral reserves and mining expertise, while India is expanding its mineral processing and downstream manufacturing capabilities. Discussions also touched on the need to develop more reliable and diversified supply chains to support the ongoing energy transition.
During the visit, the Canadian delegation toured several research facilities at CSIR-IMMT, including the Platinum Group Elements pilot plant, recycling pilot plant, seabed minerals pilot plant, and molten salt electrolysis pilot facility.
