According to the latest update from Shanghai Metals Market, alumina production in China increased 0.3 per cent year on year to 6.039 million tonnes in October 2018. The average daily production stood at 195,000 tonnes, down 1.7 per cent from September.

China produced 58.144 million tonnes of alumina in the first ten months of 2018, an increase of 1.7 per cent in the first ten months of 2018. Alumina production grew as new capacity at Shanxi Xinfa Chemical and East Hope'sJinzhong Chemical generated more output.

Xinfa Group in October had cut operating capacity at its Shanxi Jiaokou alumina refinery in northern China to 50 per cent due to limited bauxite supply and power plant issues. Environmental probes impacted production at some alumina refineries in Lvliang in Shanxi, and bauxite shortages forced some alumina refineries in Guizhou to reduce production. These factors capped gains in overall alumina production last month.

SMM expects average daily output in November to increase to 201,000 tonnes in as refineries in Shanxi recovered their output. Output is expected to come in at 6.025 million tonnes of alumina in November.
