Carrefour Poland and the EKO-Punkt Packaging Recovery Organization have come together to test a new bottle vending machine scheme in the Silesian area, enabling customers to recycle empty aluminium beverage cans and plastic bottles. Customers will receive 15 cents from Carrefour in the form of coupons that can be used to make purchases right away for each package that is returned.
The project was started to fulfil the Ministry of Environment and Climate's intentions for implementing a deposit system in Poland. Carrefour stated that the new approach offers a chance to improve the quantity of garbage recycled in Poland and boost the average Pole's family budget during periods of high inflation.
"We are convinced that this solution will allow our customers to become even more involved in activities for a clean environment in our country and will have a tangible material dimension for them," said Justyna Orzeł, vice-president of the management board and secretary general of Carrefour Poland.
The two partners will closely monitor the outcomes of the test and the upcoming legislation changes in this area. This vending machine has already been introduced in eight Carrefour hypermarkets in Sosnowiec, Rybnik, Kdzierzyn Kole, Jastrzbie Zdrój, Jaworzno, Chorzów, Gliwice, and Katowice as well as two supermarkets in Pszczyna and Zabrze.
"The project implemented jointly with Carrefour aims to give value to waste generated in households and thus increase the volume of waste sent for recycling, thus contributing to the achievement of recycling levels set by the European Union," said Leszek Pieszczek, chairman of the supervisory board of EKO-Punkt Organizacja Odzysku Opakowań.
