Canyon Resources is looking for a new chief executive, with Peter Secker stepping down just as its key bauxite project in Cameroon moves closer to production.

Secker hasn’t left immediately though. The company said he will stay on for the next few months to manage the transition, which comes at a pretty critical time for the Minim Martap project.

The mine, set to be Cameroon’s first bauxite operation, is expected to begin production in Q2 2026, with initial shipments planned for Q3 2026. Secker, who took over in July 2025, has been closely involved in pushing the project forward to this stage.

His departure is being attributed to personal reasons, but the timing means the incoming CEO will have a full plate from day one. Beyond ramping up production, they’ll also be expected to handle ongoing discussions with potential buyers and move ahead with plans for downstream processing.

A feasibility study for an alumina refinery is already underway and was about 45 per cent complete as of January 2026. That piece is important, since it ties the project more directly into the aluminium value chain rather than just exporting raw bauxite.

Non-Executive Chairman Mark Hohnen said, “We fully understand and respect Peter’s decision and have launched a global search for a senior executive with specific experience in bauxite and alumina operations.”

The scale of the project itself is significant. Minim Martap is estimated to hold over 1.1 billion tonnes of bauxite resources, including 144 million tonnes of ore reserves with grades of 51.2 per cent alumina and 1.7 per cent silica.

With construction progressing and first output approaching, the leadership transition adds another layer of constraint, but also signals that the project is moving out of development mode and into execution.
