O’Maoileoin, who currently serves as Global Group Sustainability Director at CANPACK, succeeds Tim Conybeare, commercial director for UK & Ireland at Crown Bevcan EMEA, after Conybeare’s term concluded under the organisation’s rotating leadership system. With over 15 years of commercial experience spanning roles at CANPACK, Aldi, Dairy Crest and Tesco, O’Maoileoin brings a blend of sustainability insight and brand strategy expertise to the role, an asset for an industry balancing innovation, environmental expectations, and market growth.

Reflecting on his appointment, O’Maoileoin emphasised the progress the sector continues to make, “We have seen real progress across the can industry in the last few years, from stronger recycling performance to new formats and designs that reflect how consumer expectations are changing.” He added, “Consumers want high-quality packaging that is convenient and sustainable, and they can continue to deliver on all fronts, helping brands to drive improvements in environmental performance.”
He also stated that his experience in sustainability and brand communication has given him strong insight into how rapidly expectations are changing across consumers, brands, retailers, policymakers and the wider value chain, noting that the beverage can industry is well placed to support the collective goal of building a more circular economy.
Can Makers UK has been actively strengthening the profile of beverage cans through a series of strategic initiatives, including commissioning consumer research to better understand recycling habits, recognising packaging innovation via its Design Accolades programme, and sharing industry insights on the growing use of cans across emerging segments such as wine, ready-to-drink cocktails and functional beverages.
O’Maoileoin also expressed gratitude to his predecessor, acknowledging Conybeare’s leadership during a significant phase for the association and signalling continuity as well as fresh momentum.
