BYD's largest car carrier, the BYD Shenzhen, has made a powerful debut on the global stage, docking in Brazil just one month after setting sail on its maiden voyage. The massive vessel arrived at the Port of Itajaí, delivering 7,300 brand-new BYD new energy vehicles (NEVs) a major milestone in the company's international expansion.
Towering at 219.9 meters in length with a beam of 37.7 meters, the BYD Shenzhen is a floating giant. Spanning 16 decks and capable of carrying up to 9,200 vehicles, it boasts a loading capacity equivalent to 20 football fields a true titan of the seas. Officially delivered on April 22 in Yizheng, Jiangsu province, the ship is the fourth car carrier in BYD's growing fleet, reinforcing the automaker's commitment to sustainable transport and efficient global logistics.
The BYD Shenzhen set sail on its maiden ocean voyage from Taicang, Jiangsu province, on April 27, marking another bold step in BYD's rapid expansion of its maritime transport capabilities. Over the past year, the company has accelerated its push into global markets by significantly scaling up its ocean fleet.
The journey began with the BYD Explorer No. 1, BYD's first-ever car carrier, which joined the fleet in January 2024. Though chartered from another shipowner, the vessel boasts an impressive 7,000-vehicle capacity and laid the foundation for BYD's ambitions at sea.
Stepping into full ownership, BYD introduced the BYD Hefei, its first self-owned car carrier and the first to be named after one of its key vehicle production bases. With space for 7,000 vehicles, the BYD Hefei was completed in late September 2024 and officially launched its maiden voyage on January 7 this year. Following closely, the BYD Changzhou made its debut in October 2024, becoming the second ship named after a BYD production hub, further cementing the brand's identity across both land and sea.
The BYD Changsha is the fifth addition to BYD's growing fleet and marks the company's second car carrier with a massive capacity of 9,200 vehicles. On March 17, BYD announced that the vessel was nearing its official launch. Continuing its rapid maritime expansion, BYD launched its sixth carrier, the BYD Xi'an, on April 2, further reinforcing the brand's connection to its major production bases.
Most recently, on May 20, BYD unveiled its seventh car carrier—still unnamed—adding yet another heavyweight to its fleet. This latest vessel was constructed by Guangzhou Shipyard International Company Limited (GSI), a key partner in BYD's effort to scale up its global vehicle delivery operations.
