With no immediate supply of bauxite in sight, the company said, it will be compelled to shut the refinery for 10-15 days, latest by Friday. "Going by our current stock of bauxite, we will not be in a position to run the refinery after a day or two. Then, we have to take a painful decision to shut our refinery plant for 10-15 days. The owners of the bauxite refinery on the Gove Penisula in the Northern Territory say they're working on ways to deal with an excess of waste water that accumulated on the site. Waste water is produced as part of the refining process, and the amount stored by the facility has been growing in the last decade. Pacific Aluminium Gove Operations health, safety and environment manager, Leon Staude, says the company has commissioned a project to try to neutralise waste water. "Basically, (we'll) mix it with sea water to neutralise the caustic liquor," he said. "As a result of that, you do get some precipitates, they go back to the residue disposal area, and the clean water which comes out as a result of the process comes back into our sea water channel and out into the bay."

Landowners in areas surrounding the bauxite mine in Bua are concerned at the amount of dust pollution from the mine. They raised the issue in a meeting with the Commissioner Northern last month. The dust comes mostly during the transportation of the bauxite from the mine to the jetty. Director Mineral Resources Malakai Finau says they are now looking at ways to address the issue with the landowners.
