The parties signed the agreement in Accra on October 28, 2026. Ecobank will structure the proposed financing and coordinate participation from other banks and financial institutions. Responding to the demand from various quarters, the state government has decided to reserve areas bearing iron ore, manganese ore, chromite ore and bauxite for undertaking prospecting and mining operations through Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC), the state controlled miner. The government would invoke Section 17 A (2) of Mines and Minerals (Development & Regulation) Act-1957 for reservation of mine bearing areas. The Queensland government is calling for new expressions of interest over a vacated lease to mine bauxite on Cape York. The Aurukun bauxite lease was first issued to French company Pechiney in 1975, but was not used for 28 years and was repealed. The tender was then issued to Chinese miner Chalco in 2007, but the deal folded in 2011 because the company was unable to build an aluminium refinery - which was a key term of the lease. State-promoted listed company Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation Ltd has floated tenders to sell its bauxite calcination plant in Kutch district. This comes at a time the PSU is busy setting up a Rs 12,000-crore joint venture with Nalco in the State. The plant, having a production capacity of 50,000 tonnes a year is in working condition but not producing at optimum levels, making it financially unviable, V.S. The president of the East Arnhem Chamber of Commerce says the town of Nhulunbuy in the Northern Territory is feeling the effects of a cost-cutting exercise by the nearby bauxite mine and refinery. Pacific Aluminium has begun a natural attrition process, due to tough business conditions caused by poor aluminium prices and the high Australian dollar. Chamber chairman Tim Bunton says local businesses have been less busy, but he hopes the mine will be more sustainable in the long term. "I'd imagine it would be in the high 80s or 90s, the number of staff that's been lost around town, so that obviously has to have an effect on the local community."
The bauxite mining and refining operation on the Gove Peninsula in the Northern Territory has stopped replacing workers who leave their jobs, in an effort to cut costs. The strong Australian dollar and poor prices for bauxite and aluminium products have forced the mine's owners, Pacific Aluminium, to look for savings. General manager of the Gove operations, Frank Willsdon, says the mine is cutting costs now in an attempt to make the operation sustainable in the future. "So that means getting as efficient as we can about the use of energy, about the use of caustic, which is one of our main process chemicals, indeed getting as lean as we can on the manpower front, which means operating with less people in the past than we have; not doing less work, but working in a smart way."
