Ball India expects aluminium can consumption in India to increase significantly in the coming years

EDITED BY : BEETHIKA BISWAS 2MINS READ

According to a statement of Ball India the consumption of aluminium cans for storing beverages, food items and household products in India has potential to grow significantly from the present rate.

Ball India acquired its Maharashtra plant from Rexon in 2006 and set up its own plant in Andhra Pradesh in 2015. The aluminium can maker supplies cans for beverage majors like Coca-Cola as well as for beer companies in India.

“We estimate that there will be an 8X growth in consumption of aluminium cans in India by 2030. Currently, the per capita can consumption in India stands at around one per annum. In comparable economies such as Vietnam, the per-capita consumption is approximately 70 per annum; in China, it is around 40 per annum,” said Amit Lahoti, Managing Director – India, at Ball Beverage Packaging.

As one of the two major can manufacturers in India, the total capacity of Ball India’s two plants stand at 1.6 billion cans per annum. However, the company is currently running below its capacity as it produces enough to supply the major share of the current aluminium can demands in India. The company plans to boost its capacity utilization with the increasing can demands in India. With the growing GDP in India, can consumption is likely to increase in the coming years.

“The can-recycling rate in India is estimated to be 91 per cent, which is one of the highest in the world. The total beverage can market in India is estimated to be nearly 2 billion and has been growing at double digits in recent years,” added Lahoti.

He also added that the investment in the installed capacity of its plants were done much before the can demand picked up in India. He expects more FDI to flow into the domestic aluminium can sector with the steady pick-up in demand.

“The investment in installed capacity has been done ahead of the demand curve. Further, is expected to flow into the sector as demand continues to increase,” he concluded.

It is to be noted that Hindalco Industries, Ball Beverage Packaging (India) and Can-Pack India together announced the forming of a consortium called Aluminium Beverages Can Association of India (ABCAI) in the first week of May in order to promote the use of aluminium cans for beverage packaging.
