The social inventories of primary aluminium in China usher the year 2020 with a growth of 18,000 tonnes over the week, indicating a potential end to the continued inventory downtrend since March 2019. China’s aluminium scrap imports from the US have been declining over the past few months this year and September was of no exception, as found by the United States Geological Survey. According to the survey data, China in September imported 19,600 tonnes, down by 26.03 per cent from 26,500 tonnes in August. In July, China’s import volume from the US was 31,300 tonnes, which represents the fact that the import in August inched down by 15.33 per cent. US aluminium plates, sheets and bars imports from Canada grew M-o-M in September by 8%
After a drop in August 2019, the United States aluminium plates, sheets and bars imports from Canada were found rebounded in September by about 8.28 per cent to 18,300 tonnes, according to the United States Geological Survey data. In August, the import amount was 16,900 tonnes after declining by 6.11 per cent from 18,000 tonnes in July. But since in June, the country had imported 16,500 tonnes of aluminium plates, sheets and bars from Canada, the import volume in July was a gain of 9.09 per cent. The US dollar extended its weakness and fell for the third straight session on Monday as investors favoured riskier assets. The dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of other currencies, lost 0.24 per cent. LME base metals mostly fell while the SHFE complex closed mixed overnight. According to a recent report, premiums for aluminium shipments to Japan for the first quarter of 2020 have been set at $83 per tonne, down 14 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2019 amid weaker aluminium demand from the electronics and auto sector. This marks the second consecutive quarterly drop. During October-December quarter, the premiums for aluminium shipments to Japan were $97 per tonne. China Customs data showed a rise in China’s bauxite imports during November, followed by three consecutive months of downfall. Recording a growth of 11.38 per cent from a month ago and 21.9 per cent from the same period last year, the amount of import rebounded to 7.21 million tonnes. In October, around 6.48 million tonnes of bauxite were imported by China, down 3.97 per cent from 6.75 million tonnes in September.
