Austria's aluminium alloy ingot exports set to rise in 2017 after 3 years of marginal YoY decline

EDITED BY : DIPANWITA GUPTA 3MINS READ

Aluminium downstream products comprise a key export commodity of Austria. The country ships extruded aluminium ingots of both alloyed and non-alloyed varieties to the European as well as global product manufacturers. According to a recent market report, automotive industry followed by packaging and electricals are the main demand drivers of Austrian aluminium industry. Due to a recent surge in the domestic demand for aluminium extrusions, the country’s export volume has been on declines over the last three years. With downstream aluminium manufacturers scaling up their capacities, the export is expected to surge in the next five years.

Austria exported 231,572.5 tonnes of aluminium alloy ingots in 2014. In the next financial year, the volume declined slightly by one percent to total at 229,240.008 tonnes. In 2016, aluminium alloy ingot export volume surged again to reach 247298 tonnes, up almost 8 per cent year-on-year. In 2017, Austria is estimated to ship around 218,367.36 tonnes of alloyed aluminium ingots, till October, logging a volume growth of 5.8 per cent from the corresponding period previous year.

News
Value-wise, the total export of aluminium alloy ingots from Austria has traced a year-on-year decline over the last three years. Austria shipped aluminium ingots (alloy) worth US$520.5 million in 2014, which came down by 5.72 per cent to total at US$490.07 million in 2015. In the last fiscal year, the European country exported aluminium ingots (alloy) worth US$466.5 million, down 4.9 per cent from the corresponding period previous year. However, this year, till October, the total aluminium alloy ingot export from Austria is estimated to reach US$404.8 million, marking a rise of 4.4 per cent from the same period of 2016.

News
In the recently held Aluminium and New Materials roundtable conference organized by AlCircle, in Kolkata, India, Mr. Fabrizio Ciampoli, CEO of All Metal Services, Italy, pointed out that there has been a recent surge in demand for extruded alloyed and/or non-alloyed aluminium ingots in the European market. The commodity is being used extensively by the automotive manufacturers in the region. The spike in domestic demand for the product has resulted in decreased shipments to the international market. In fact, there is a clear supply deficit of alloyed aluminium ingots in countries like Austria, where AMAG Austria Metall AG and Hammerer Aluminium Industries are the only major aluminium producers.
