A prominent player in the sustainable energy sector, Atlas Renewable Energy, announced a new power purchase agreement (PPA) with a significant energy trading company in Colombia. With this deal, the development of the El Campano Solar Plant in the northern part of Colombia gets the nudge to proceed with it. It will enhance the reliability of the national electricity grid while also tackling the growing energy needs of the country.
{alcircleadd}This project is deemed to be the second venture into construction in Colombia by Atlas Renewable Energy. This project perfectly aligns with the company’s ambitious goal of reaching 1 GW of installed renewable capacity in the country over the next few years.
With the capacity of 128 MWp, the project will start its operations at the plant by the end of 2027 and with the power purchase agreement signed, this will provide around 245 GWh of renewable energy each year, ensuring a dependable, stable and cost-effective power supply.

This exact amount of energy in question here will be enough to power more than 110 thousand Colombian households annually.
Secured through the 2024 Reliability Charge Auction, this marks a key infrastructure project, aiming to boost generation capacity, improve system reliability and increase the proportion of solar energy in Colombia’s energy mix.
Additionally, the project is projected to reduce CO₂ emissions by about 38,200 tonnes each year, helping to create a more resilient energy framework that fosters long-term economic growth.
Camilo Serrano, Regional General Manager of Atlas Renewable Energy, stated, "This project reflects our focus on the effective execution of strategic power generation projects for the country and on developing energy solutions tailored to our customers’ needs."

Achieving this milestone is mainly owed to the trust shared in Atlas, which has been built after the successful launch of its first Colombian project, Shangri-La. The Shangri-La project was developed and commissioned in record time while adhering to strict technical, environmental and social standards, highlighting the company’s proven ability to carry out large-scale developments with operational excellence and reliability for the national electricity system.
Throughout construction, the project will adopt a value-creation approach for the region, focusing on training and employing local workers, as well as implementing social and environmental programs aimed at boosting productive capacity and regional development.
A key part of this strategy is the “We Are Part of the Same Energy” program, the renewable energy firm's flagship initiative designed to encourage local community involvement in the renewable energy sector through technical training and job opportunities.
In initiatives like the Shangri-La solar plant in Tolima, the program has trained over 140 women from 13 local communities, expanding job opportunities and increasing female participation in solar project construction.
With the El Campano Solar Plant, Atlas is further solidifying its presence in Colombia through projects that enhance the electricity system's capacity, improve grid reliability and support the country’s sustainable long-term growth.
