The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has floated an investment plan which will support the technologies needed for the zero-emissions transition. Established in 2012, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency is an independent organisation of the Australian Federal Government. ARENA was established to manage the renewable energy program of Australia.

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) expanded its remit to incorporate low-emissions technology. Not only this, but they have also released their Funding and Investment Plan which will be used to finance the low-emissions technology.
The investment plan will provide funding for the projects that reduce the energy transition like energy storage, supporting the transition to low emissions aluminium and steel as well as commercialisation clean hydrogen production. Not only this, but the project will also check the opportunities to increase carbon capture as well as a storage technology.
According to Darren Miller, the CEO of the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, “To get to net zero, we need to invest today in the technologies that are going to transform our energy system and our economy in the years to come. Our new priorities are focussed on the next generation of energy technologies that will position Australia as a leader in a net-zero world.”
“We’ve already committed over A$160m (US$116m) in hydrogen, but we need to continue to grow a clean hydrogen industry and export market as this is still in its infancy. We also need to support the aluminium and steel industry to transition, whether through electrification, hydrogen or new alternatives to improve the competitiveness and emissions intensity of our heavy industries. Finally, we will be looking to scale up CCS and reduce the cost of soil carbon. As these are new areas for ARENA, we’ll be consulting with industry and researchers to develop our approach to these technologies,” added Darren Miller.
However, Australia is using a technology-based approach to achieving the zero-emission goal. According to the Climate Action Tracker, ARENA’s climate policy rating is not sufficient; they are yet to achieve their zero targets and also the climate ambitions under the Paris Agreement.
