Anglesey Aluminum remains tight lipped over smelter bidders
Last week it was announced that Land and Lakes is looking to build a Center Parcsesque leisure holiday resort on the 630 acres of land surrounding the smelter site. But who or what will be developed at the industrial site will not be known until later this summer.
The operational site was put on the market in September 2010 resulting in 12 expressions of interest from potential buyers.
A spokeswoman for Anglesey Aluminum said that from the list of 12 we created a shortlist of three companies which they felt would maximize alternative employment opportunities and increase economic activity within the area in line with our aspiration goal of creating a sustainable long term legacy. We have continued detailed discussions with the shortlisted parties with a view to selecting the most appropriate business to achieve their stated aims.
She said that due to confidentiality agreements we are unable to divulge details regarding the nature of their proposed business plans at this time. The proposals involve significant sums of capital investment into the site and will bring opportunities for over 500 new jobs to the local area. Any agreement that is reached in regard to the purchase of the site will include a provision for the continuation of the Anglesey Aluminum re melt business.
Mr Gill Ronayne senior business adviser of Anglesey Aluminum said that “We can’t say any more than that at the moment but a decision will be made in a couple of month time.”
Mr Albert Owen MP said that “All I can say is I know three companies are bidding and that’s about it. And I’d love to see companies who are involved in renewable energies such as building wind turbines come to the site. I know that the senior managers at Anglesey Aluminium have been working hard with these companies and like everybody else, I look forward to finding out who is coming here.”
