Alupro has been announced as the 2022 Student Starpack Awards' newest sponsor. The competition, which is organised by the Institute of Materials, Minerals, and Mining (IOM3), pushes university students to develop new packaging solutions to tackle difficulties given by top businesses. Established in 1964, the Student Starpack Awards aim to inspire the next generation of packaging professionals by discovering, honouring, and supporting exceptional young people and their instructors, encouraging them to bring inventive new ideas to the UK's ever-growing packaging sector.

Alupro has released a detailed brief as part of the agreement, requesting applicants to design the principal packaging for a daily personal care product utilising endlessly recyclable aluminium. The judges will be looking for a solution that can be mass-produced in a reasonable amount of time, has shelf appeal, is marketable, and can be reused or entirely recycled at the end of its useful life.
Along with a £500 cash award, the winner will be invited to visit one of Crown Packaging's beverage can operations in Leicester or Carlisle to witness the aluminium can manufacturing process live. All students who complete the brief will get free training sessions from The Aluminium Federation (ALFED), on how to effectively use aluminium in package design.
“Inspiring the next generation and encouraging more students to consider roles in the packaging industry is key to the sector’s continued progress. Initiatives like the Student Starpack Awards provide an excellent platform for applicants to really challenge convention and embrace creativity,” said Tom Giddings, the general manager of Alupro.
“Our 2022 brief aims to tackle a common recycling challenge – materials used in packaging for non-luxury personal care products. By highlighting the superiority of aluminium and promoting its recyclability through kerbside collection systems, we aim to encourage the packaging designers of tomorrow to prioritise more sustainable material choices and reduce their reliance on secondary packaging,” added Giddings.
