Canada and China remain two major exporter of semi-finished aluminium to the US. With the on-going trade disruptions between the US and its exporting countries, and the imposition of 10% tax on imported aluminium, the dynamics are seeing a multi-dimensional change. The countries have already started imposing retaliatory tariffs on the US on various products. We are analysing the export figures for aluminium Plates, sheets, bars for May and January to May 2018 from both the countries.

The data shows, Canada exported about 21,300 tonnes of aluminium Plates, sheets, bars to the US in May and for the period from January to May the amount stood at 115,000 tonnes. For Canada, the export volume remained almost flat month on month in the first five months of 2018. For China, the export volume of aluminium Plates, sheets, bars to the US remained at 22,000 tonnes. The YTD volume stood at 195,000 tonnes. Though the May volume remains same for both the countries, the different in total volume was due to the higher volume of aluminium Plate, sheet and bar exports to the US by China in January.
When we look at the MoM data for China, we see a big drop in export of Chinese aluminium Plates, sheets, bars to the US from January 2018 to May 2018. The export volume stood at 81,200 tonnes in January and it dropped to 22,000 tonnes in May registering a drop of about 73%.

The reason for the drop is not only the 10% import tariffs, but also the continuous investigation taken up by the US department of Commerce against Chinese semi-finished imports. In 2018, the US based Aluminum Extruders Council sought new trade protections against Chinese extrusion imports, accusing Chinese manufacturers of evading U.S. AD & CVD by shipping aluminium products through Vietnam. Further tariffs were imposed on Chinese aluminium alloys and aluminium foils accused of evading U.S. AD & CVD.
These restrictions put on the import of aluminium and semi-finished aluminium are expected to register further impact on the export volume and revenue of exporting countries through the rest of the year as the tariffs were made compulsory for Canada and many other countries from June .
