Aluminium recycling opens up more business opportunities for Africa

EDITED BY : 2MINS READ

Africa is one of the largest and evolving nations with a population of 1.2 billion. According to IEA, by 2040 the population is expected to grow by 800 million to 2 billion, similar to the population rise in the U.S .and Europe. Being the fifth largest nation in terms of population and also with their growing mining force, it is difficult to believe that the continent produces only 1 percent of the world’s secondary aluminium.

As a result of which an international initiative to industrialize Africa and include the continent into the economic power, making it produce more resources than the usual.

Ramco Metals began recycling in Nigeria around 7 years ago and is also taking steps to build Africa into a sustainable powerhouse.

Africa has around 50 metal recycling facilities, whereas other nations like Europe have more than 250 facilities. It is predicted that only 13 percent of the recyclable products are reused in Nigeria, with almost zero formal waste diversion process.

A cleantech revolution with recycling, renewable energy, and sustainable infrastructure projects is already being carried out in Africa. The main breakthrough will be to include sustainable infrastructure along with economic expansion throughout the region. With the expansion of the metal business in the country, expansion in recycling capacities and sustainable systems will become more important.

Without the sustainable approach, Africa’s economic growth will be affected with all the negative impacts of mining like soil erosion, carbon emissions, displacement of fauna, biodiversity loss, deforestation, and water and air contamination.

Increasing the recycling activity and building a sustainable opportunity for jobs, people, and the communities is really important for the budding markets where improvement is crucial. Knowing about the local surroundings, people, mechanisms, and other principles, will allow the recyclers to use the unexplored feedstocks.

An experienced group of board and management who has previously worked in Africa is required to successfully carry out the concept of recycling in Africa and its emerging market. The right group of people with the right kind of experience will help in making greater difference in the emerging market.

Outlook For The Indian Aluminium Industry

Waste is one of the top issues in Africa and solving it will need partnerships, creative approach and the willingness to experience the benefits. Solving such huge problems like waste management also provides great financial outcome and also creates visible differences in the life of the people and the environment.
