
Imports of aluminium ingot, scrap and mill products into the U.S. and Canada stand at 702 million pounds in December 2016, up 70% YOY. Exports Including scrap, which accounted for roughly 50.8% reported aluminium exports in December, stands at 472 million pounds, down 7.3% YOY and excluding scrap the amount stands at 232 million pounds, down 14% YOY. Scrap export remains flat YOY. Total imports in 2016 were 7,956 million pounds, up 34% to over 2015, while exports were down 3.4% to 5,633 million pounds.
The Aluminium Association’s “Index of Net New Orders of Aluminum Mill Products” for January increased 12.5% over December 2016. Orders for flat roll products were up 8.6%, extruded products up 29.5% and orders for redraw rod were up 12.1%. Orders increased 6.4% YOY. On average, orders recorded by domestic producers in 2016 were up slightly over 2015.

The Aluminum Association and the Aluminium Association of Canada, reported primary aluminium production in North America (U.S. and Canada) was at an annual rate of 3,968,904 tonnes during January 2016, down slightly from the December 2016. The production rate in the U.S. was down 1.4%, while the Canadian production rate was almost flat. The North American annual rate was down 5% from January 2016. Actual production in January 2017 stands at 337,085 tonnes, down 4.7% YOY.
