
In South America, alumina production surged by 73,000 tonnes or 8.1 per cent month-on-month during July 2022 to stand at 974,000 tonnes, found the International Aluminium Institute. In June, the output was at 901,000 tonnes after being slipped by 57,000 tonnes or 5.95 per cent from 958,000 tonnes in May.

On a year-on-year calculation, South America’s alumina production in July 2022 edged 4.42 per cent lower than 1.019 million tonnes a year ago.
Daily average production in South America during July 2022 was 31,400 tonnes, up by 1,400 tonnes from 30,000 tonnes in June but down by 1,500 tonnes from 32,900 tonnes in July 2021.
Total alumina production in South America from January to July 2022 amounted to 6.607 million tonnes, reflecting a downfall of 10.30 per cent from 7.366 million tonnes during the same period last year. Daily average output totalled 218,100 tonnes in South America in those seven months of the year.
IAI data also showed alumina production in North America registered an increase of 2,000 tonnes M-o-M to 201,000 tonnes during July 2022. In June, the output stood at 199,000 tonnes, up by 16,000 tonnes or 8.74 per cent from 183,000 tonnes in May.
On a year-on-year basis, North America’s alumina output in July 2022 stood 14.1 per cent or 33,000 tonnes lower than 234,000 tonnes.
Daily average output in North America during July 2022 was 6,500 tonnes, almost unchanged from 6,600 tonnes in the previous month but 1,000 tonnes lower than 7,500 tonnes during the corresponding period of the last year.
During January-July 2022, North America’s alumina production totalled 1.384 million tonnes, which reflected a year-on-year plunge of 8.77 per cent from 1.517 million tonnes.
