
According to the International Aluminium Institute, primary aluminium production in Africa stood at 140,000 tonnes during December 2023, registering a hike of 11.11 per cent or 14,000 tonnes month-on-month from 126,000 tonnes. On a year-on-year basis, Africa’s primary aluminium output in December’22 edged a slight drop of 2,000 tonnes from 138,000 tonnes.

In the fourth quarter of 2022, Africa’s primary aluminium production totalled 407,000 tonnes, down by 1.45 per cent from 413,000 tonnes in the previous quarter despite a monthly rise in December. On a year-on-year calculation, Africa’s Q4 output grew marginally by 1,000 tonnes from 406,000 tonnes, found IAI.
The aggregate output of primary aluminium in Africa through 2022 summed at 1.622 million tonnes, up by 2.01 per cent from 1.590 million tonnes a year ago.
The world primary aluminium production in 2022 amounted to 68.417 million tonnes, an increase of 1.97 per cent from 67.092 million tonnes a year earlier. In December 2022, the world primary aluminium output was 5.859 million tonnes – 3.55 per cent higher than 5.658 million tonnes a month ago and 6.12 per cent more than 5.521 million tonnes a year earlier.
World daily average production of primary aluminium was 189,000 tonnes in December 2022, majorly unchanged compared to 188,600 tonnes in November but up by 6.12 per cent from 178,100 tonnes.
