The Pittsburgh, US-based industrial corporation and eighth-largest aluminium producer, Alcoa, supports the proposal submitted last week by Russian aluminium giant Rusal for the London Metal Exchange to bring forth the details concerning the source of all metal in LME-approved warehouses. Following the Ukraine-Russia geopolitical crisis, Rusal has not been directly targeted for sanctions by any nation. On the other hand, Alcoa has diligently campaigned to prohibit Russian metal from being traded and stored on the LME. It is concerned that large amounts of aluminium in the LME warehouse might mangle pricing. After an industry consultation in October, the London Metal Exchange (LME) pronounced there would be no bar of Russian metal as a compelling section of the market was still planning to...

Australia could emerge as a leader in net-zero alumina refining worldwide if it obeys a plan developed by three major producers, Alcoa, Rio Tinto, and South 32. Together, the three organisations have developed a detailed road map that ensures net zero emissions by 2050. The report was published by the Federal Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) on November 22. Australia exports the most considerable quantity of alumina in the world and also produces ample bauxite. Refining activities in Australia cause up to 3% of the country's total greenhouse gas emissions. With the rising need for cleaner and greener aluminium in the western market, Australia has to think of other alternatives to make its products acceptable in the electronics or automobile sector. This calls for newer advanced...

A recent attempt by a local business to ship 158,284 kg of aluminium and copper flakes to China via Senari Port was stopped by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (RMC). According to Dr Ahmad Taufik Sulaiman, director of Sarawak Customs, the objects were scrap metal estimated to be worth RM2.17 million. According to him, two people were detained for forging statements for goods that were supposed to be exported. Following a tip from Customs intelligence, enforcement agents investigated six containers at Senari Port on October 12. The containers had declarations claiming to be copper and aluminium flakes. “The initial inspection, which is the first found in the state, found that the items declared by the company were not the same as in the Custom’s documents, but metal waste. Following...

Albers Aerospace, located in McKinney, Texas, has taken over Garrett Container Systems, a specialist in making aluminium storage and shipping containers. This move was to solidify Alber’s military customer base. Founded in 1991 by Don and Liz Morin, Garrett Container Systems (GCS) is a master in creating rigid aluminium storage and logistical containers or tactical kits. GCS will be operated as a sister concern of Albers Aerospace and will run its existing operations in Accident, Maryland. Aluminium is a lightweight, anti-corrosive, non-ferrous material that is very useful in making accessories for the military. Moreover, aluminium can be infinitely recycled, ultimately raising the sustainability quotient of an end-user product. When recycled, aluminium retains its original properties...

On November 22, South Korea-based LG Chem declared that it would make a US$3 billion investment to construct a battery cathode factory in Tennessee to suffice the emerging demand for electric vehicle (EV) components. Early in August, a US law was passed making automakers, and battery suppliers solely depend on China for sourcing at a cost disadvantage. Since then, this has been the first major South Korean investment in the United States to enhance the electric vehicle (EV) market. The company claimed that the unit will produce an estimated 120,000 tonnes of cathode materials by 2027, ample to run almost 1.2 million electric vehicles. The new plant will produce batteries with nickel, cobalt, manganese and aluminium (NCMA) chemistry. The NCMA battery consists of almost 90 per cent nickel...

Pendle Borough Council has launched a new initiative to encourage the recycling of aluminium foil. Residents are urged to clean and recycle their trays, wrapping foil, aerosol cans, beverage cans, and empty food tins as part of the effort. The six-week program, which began in October, aims to increase the amount of metal packaging recycled by households throughout the borough. Advertising will be placed on digital street signs, buses, and community radio stations as part of the consumer engagement campaign "Foil in Love with Recycling," which is being run in collaboration with the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro). Additionally, creative posts will be shared on the council's social media pages. Councillor Nadeem Ahmed, Leader of Pendle Borough Council, said: "While we...

For years, the Worthington Cub Scouts pack 134 has solicited donations of aluminium cans from the neighbourhood, utilising the proceeds to support Scouting initiatives for young people in the area. Scoutmaster Scott Carlson said their most recent trip to Shine Brothers cost him because people throw garbage bags into the gravity wagons they provide for the public to donate their empty aluminium cans. “I had to dispose of all the garbage — at least half a trailer load of garbage. (Shine Brothers) put it back in our containers,” said Carlson. Anybody who is dumping trash into the waggons, other than aluminium cans, is urged to stop by Carlson. Donations of aluminium cans support Scouting activities like sending youngsters to camp or paying for outings with the Scout trailer. He also...

Aluminium foil deliveries have registered a slight year-on-year dip of 0.3 per cent for the third quarter of 2022 to 237,800 tonnes but recorded a year-to-date (YTD) increase of 0.4 per cent than a year ago, showed the European Aluminium Foil Association (EAFA). During July-September, aluminium foil deliveries exhibited a strong performance across all markets, well ahead of comparative figures for 2020 when the COVID-19 impact was in full swing, and 3.6 per cent more than 2019 pre-pandemic levels, according to the association. Demand for thicker gauges, used for semi-rigid containers, technical or other applications, declined by 4.1 per cent during Q3 and 2.7 per cent YTD, owing to a slowdown in home food deliveries. In contrast, exports of aluminium foils outside Europe rose 1.3 per cent...

Headquartered in Germany, Fassmer has created a brand new electric aluminium vessel under the order of the Oldenburg Institute of Systems Engineering for Future Mobility of the German Aerospace Centre (Deutsche Zentrum fur Luft- und Raumfahrt, DLR). The 8m long customised aluminium boat has been crafted to adhere to the specifications of the research project. The water vessel is exceptionally agile, and due to its lightweight aluminium construction, it can easily tread the ocean or lake waters. Under the given specifications, the aluminium boat can be furnished with special sensory modules that permit the vessel to be controlled, particularly from the shore, to inspect berthing manoeuvres. Moreover, aligned with the idea of creating autonomous shipping technology, the vessel will be put...
