Scatec has begun construction of the first phase of a major solar power project that will supply renewable electricity to the Aluminium Company of Egypt (Egyptalum), advancing the Egyptian producer's efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of its aluminium operations. The first phase of the Dandara Solar Power project comprises a 569 MW solar plant supported by a 100-MWh battery energy storage system. The Norwegian renewable energy company has also signed loan agreements to finance the development, which was first announced in 2025. Under a 25-year power purchase agreement, the facility will supply clean electricity to Egyptalum. Once operational, the first phase is expected to generate approximately 1.4 TWh of renewable power annually and avoid more than 550,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide...

The chief executive of Rio Tinto, Jakob Stausholm, is concerned about the unshackled flow of Russian aluminium into the US, which is decreasing the competitiveness of North American producers. According to Stausholm, Russian aluminium imports remain exempt from US sanctions, whereas allies like Australia are still subject to Trump-era restrictions. Since taking the helm of Rio at the beginning of 2021, he has been extraordinarily outspoken about the aluminium industry. As the US trade data shows Russia was the third-largest aluminium exporter to the US in August, the warning from the head of one of the world's largest aluminium producers is timely. Even as worldwide buyers refused to purchase Russian metal due to Ukraine-Russia geopolitical crisis, Russian imports last month were up...

The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) during their Convention & Exposition (ISRI2022) in late March found Greg Wittbecker, an advisor to London-based CRU International referring to the scarcity of primary aluminium worldwide and encouraging the growth of scrap recycle to fill in the demand cap. He also pointed out that there won’t be any hike in LME prices for an unforeseen amount of time due to these low carbon aluminium initiatives by major companies like Novelis and Alcoa Corp. Nivea is also shifting towards greener ways of producing their aerosol cans and aluminium packaging solutions to create a fully circular economy. With the focus on augmenting its refining capacity, Runaya Refining has placed an order for two additional SARAH hot dross processing units from Taha...

The figure below provides further information on the current state of aluminium billet inventories in China: The inventories in Wuxi, Changzhou and Nanchang grew by 300 tonnes, 500 tonnes and 200 tonnes, respectively. As of Thursday, the inventories for the same closed...

An amazing discovery was made earlier this year when Chris Coates, site manager at the Halton Mill received a phone call from one of his factory workers. It was reported that an unidentified aluminium car chassis has been uncovered in the corner of the scrapyard at the Wicks recycling yard in Cumbria, UK. What came forward with the unveiling suggested that Lancaster might have had a chance of becoming a car manufacturing area near the end of the World War II. The journey begins in November 1944, when Denis Kendall, the MP of Grantham announced the idea of a ‘People’s Car’ acquirable for just £100 and an additional £25 tax. This led to the foundation of a new company named Grantham Productions Limited, which he wished to base on the British Manufacturing and Research Company (BMARC) on...

This week, the global primary aluminium segment witnessed many important events. To begin with, on Wednesday, the LME aluminium benchmark price dropped to its lowest in 18 months since March 2021 as markets prepared for another significant increase in US interest rates that may stifle economic development. According to Ali Al-Baqali, the Chief Executive of Aluminium Bahrain, customers in Europe are cautious about placing orders for next year owing to recession-related fears, resulting in a fall in demand (Alba). Apart from this, on Tuesday, September 20, Rio Tinto announced that it will join the First Movers Coalition forum, a worldwide endeavour to aid in the commercialization of zero-carbon technology by channelling purchasing power and supply chains, together with more than 50 other...
