15-tonne anorthosite push meets Greenland security pact as AnorTech advances sustainable alumina

Greenland’s newly signed security agreement is bringing fresh attention to the island’s critical-minerals potential — and AnorTech is positioning its sustainable alumina project to benefit from the stronger investment environment.

AnorTech has welcomed the Greenland Security Agreement signed by Greenland, Denmark and the United States at the United Nations General Assembly on September 22, saying the framework could strengthen the environment for critical-mineral development and secure supply chains.

For AnorTech, the development comes as it advances its Gronne Bjerg anorthosite project and works towards commercialising a portfolio that includes zero-waste smelter-grade alumina (SGA) and high-purity alumina (HPA).

The company said the agreement strengthens regional defence cooperation, affirms Greenland’s sovereignty and self-determination, and recognises the strategic importance of critical-mineral projects. AnorTech President Jim Cambon said the company expects increased investment in Greenland’s critical-mineral projects to follow.

From anorthosite to alumina

The Gronne Bjerg project is at the centre of AnorTech’s strategy. The company owns 100% of the project, which is located around 80 kilometres northeast of Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, with access to open tidewater and significant hydroelectric potential.

Rather than relying on conventional bauxite as its feedstock, AnorTech is developing a proprietary process to produce smelter-grade alumina and high-purity alumina from anorthosite.

The process is designed to avoid conventional bauxite-residue tailings while generating saleable by-products, including amorphous silica and calcium-based industrial materials. AnorTech filed a U.S. provisional patent covering its sustainable SGA process in February 2025.

15 tonnes already shipped for pilot testing

The project is still advancing towards commercialisation rather than operating as a producing alumina facility.

AnorTech has shipped 15 tonnes of Gronne Bjerg anorthosite to Ontario in preparation for pilot-plant testing. The company is also pursuing strategic industry partnerships to accelerate the commercialisation of its alumina technologies.

Its technology portfolio extends beyond alumina. The company is also developing alumina-based catalysts for CO₂ capture, CO₂-free refractory cement, advanced 3D-printable cement and anorthosite-based materials for lunar construction.

AnorTech reported more than CAD 3 million in working capital, providing financial backing as it moves its technologies through the development and pilot-testing stage.

Critical minerals meet midstream processing

The latest development also fits into a broader critical-minerals strategy involving Greenland Mines.

In June, Greenland Mines entered into a strategic share-exchange agreement with AnorTech, initially acquiring a 9.9 per cent stake, with an option to increase its ownership to as much as 19.9 per cent under defined terms. The investment was positioned as a move beyond upstream mineral resources towards the midstream processing segment of the critical-materials value chain.

That relationship gives the Gronne Bjerg project a wider strategic context. The project combines anorthosite resources, marine access and proximity to hydroelectric potential, while the broader strategy envisages linking Greenland resources with industrial and processing infrastructure in the North Atlantic region.

For the aluminium industry, the significance lies in the attempt to develop an alternative pathway to alumina production while addressing the environmental burden associated with conventional bauxite refining.

Greenland’s strategic spotlight grows

The security agreement adds another layer to Greenland’s growing importance in discussions around critical minerals and strategic supply chains. The September 22 accord allows the United States to expand its military presence in Greenland while placing the territory's security relationship within a broader Arctic and NATO framework.

Against that backdrop, projects focused on Greenland’s mineral resources are receiving greater strategic attention. AnorTech’s challenge now is to translate that attention into technological validation, partnerships and eventually commercial-scale production.
