Khalid A. Latif, CEO of Midal Cables since April 2024, brings over 35 years of aluminium industry expertise spanning operations, marketing and strategic leadership. A veteran of Aluminium Bahrain (Alba), he has a proven track record of driving growth, efficiency and global expansion. Under his leadership, Midal Cables continues to strengthen its international presence across Bahrain, Mozambique, Saudi Arabia, Canada and the UK, with a strong emphasis on innovation and sustainability.
In an interview for "Sustainability & Recycling: Aluminium's Dual Commitment", Khalid A. Latif outlines Midal Cables’ strategic focus on sustainability, digitalisation and expansion. He highlights the launch of MiRecAL, the company’s certified green product line and its role in reducing carbon emissions and how Midal’s operational upgrades, talent development and community engagement are shaping a more sustainable and globally competitive future.
AL Circle: Could you please elaborate on the key sustainability features of the MiRecAL wire rods? Specifically, how do they contribute to reducing GHG emissions and energy consumption in end-user applications? Additionally, what differentiates MiRecAL wire rods from other products available in the market?
Khalid A. Latif: Introduced in August 2025, MiRecAL represents Midal Cables’ premium range of aluminium and alloy wire rods — setting a new benchmark in sustainability, performance, and quality. Designed to advance the circular economy, MiRecAL delivers up to 95% energy savings compared to primary aluminium, thanks to its high recycled content and efficient production process.
Every tonne of MiRecAL produced helps avoid approximately 8 tonnes of CO₂ emissions and save 14,000 kWh of energy, significantly lowering its environmental footprint. With up to 29 per cent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than conventional aluminium rods, MiRecAL is actively driving the shift toward a low-carbon economy.
Beyond its sustainability credentials, MiRecAL stands out for its superior electrical, mechanical, and chemical performance, meeting and exceeding the world’s leading standards — including IEC, EN, ASTM, and ISO 14021:2016. Proudly made in Bahrain, MiRecAL is not just a sustainable solution but also a technologically advanced one, ensuring consistent quality and reliability for global customers.
AL Circle: How much recycled content does MiRecAL wire rods have? Howmuch waste landfills does the product reduce?
Khalid A. Latif: MiRecAL wire rods are available in R15% and R30% recycled content variants, allowing customers to select the sustainability level that aligns best with their environmental and operational goals. By maximising the use of secondary aluminium, MiRecAL plays a pivotal role in diverting post-consumer and industrial scrap from landfills, reintroducing valuable material back into the production loop.
Aligned with Bahrain’s national net-zero ambitions and Midal’s broader ESG commitments, MiRecAL combines measurable carbon savings with uncompromised performance. Offered in 9.5 mm and 12.0 mm diameters and grades EC1350, EC1370, Al6101, and Al6201, the range can be fully tailored to customer specifications while supporting a more circular and sustainable aluminium future.
